Creativity Needs Good Input
Ever sat down to “be creative” and just… nothing? Blank page. Empty brain. That’s not a lack of creativity, that’s a lack of input.
Just like you can’t build muscle on junk food, you can’t build strong ideas on noise. If your daily intake is fast content and shallow scrolling, your thinking will feel thin, too.
A lot of people treat creativity like a show. They go to a workshop, take a photo with some sticky notes, and call themselves creative. But that’s not how it works.
You can’t fake it. If you want better ideas, you need better ingredients.
I call it: Creative Intake.
Creativity is what you feed it
You don’t need 100 books. You just need better ones.
Books that sharpen your thinking. Books that open your eyes. Books that remind you why you care in the first place.
The books below are a mix of things I’ve read, am currently reading, or have in my personal wishlist. I’m not writing this from theory. I’m writing from experience, curiosity, confusion, and a desire to do better work.
I’m sharing these not as a reading challenge, but as a creative diet. Take what you need. Save the rest for later.
🧠 Books That Help You Think
These books teach you how to think, not just how to make.
The Design of Everyday Things — Don Norman Why some things are easy to use and others are a mess. After this book, you’ll see good and bad design everywhere.
Universal Principles of Design — Lidwell, Holden & Butler 125 design principles explained clearly. Think of it as a cheat sheet you’ll return to often.
Graphic Design Theory — Helen Armstrong Design ideas from past to present. Helps you understand how today’s visual culture came to be.
Discursive Design — Bruce & Stephanie Tharp Design isn’t just about solving problems. It can ask questions, challenge assumptions, and make people stop and think.
Designerly Ways of Knowing — Nigel Cross Design is its own kind of thinking — different from science or art. This book explains how.
Thinking with Type — Ellen Lupton Type is more than letters. It’s how your message sounds visually. Essential for any designer who works with words.
Design for the Real World — Victor Papanek Design has real impact. This one reminds you to create for people, not just for aesthetics.
Terra Incognita — Aulia Akbar Design is not just about visuals. It’s about understanding people, society, and the world around you.
The Politics of Design — Ruben Pater Even small design choices carry political weight. This book helps you notice the bias built into the work we make.
Citizen First, Designer Second — Rejane Dal Bello (wishlist) Being a good designer starts with being a good human. This book makes that clear — and reminds you who your work is really for.
I return to these books when I start to feel disconnected from what matters. They don’t just teach you design, they remind you why you’re designing in the first place.
🔥 Books That Give You Creative Energy
These books wake you up when your work starts feeling too safe or too stale.
Creative Confidence — Tom & David Kelley Creativity isn’t a gift — it’s a skill. This book helps you build it one step at a time.
Steal Like an Artist — Austin Kleon No idea is 100% original. This book helps you take influence and turn it into something honest and your own.
Show Your Work! — Austin Kleon You don’t need to be famous. Just open up. Share your process. Let people learn with you.
The Art of Noticing — Rob Walker (wishlist) You don’t need big inspiration. You need to pay attention. This book trains you to find ideas in everyday life.
A Whack on the Side of the Head — Roger von Oech (wishlist) This one’s fun and weird in the best way. It helps you think sideways, not just forward.
How to Fly a Horse — Kevin Ashton (wishlist) Forget the myth of the genius. Real creativity is about showing up and doing the work — again and again.
These aren’t how-to books. They’re reminder books. They remind you what it feels like to care, to notice, to make something that matters.
Tips
Feeling stuck? Try this: Pick one book. Just one.
Put it next to your bed, or on your desk. Read 10 pages a day before opening your favorite app.
You don’t need a new system. You just need better input. Ideas grow from what you feed them.
Your creativity is hungry.
