Pakistan could not have asked for a better start to the Australia tour of Pakistan 2026.

In the opening ODI at Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium, the home side completely outplayed Australia and secured a convincing victory after bowling them out for just 200 runs. While several Pakistan bowlers contributed, the biggest story of the match was the unforgettable debut of Arafat Minhas, who claimed a brilliant five-wicket haul and instantly became the center of attention.

For Australia, it was a frustrating afternoon. There were a few promising partnerships and a couple of half-centuries, but they never managed to build the kind of innings needed on a pitch that became increasingly difficult to score on.

Matthew Short showed patience and maturity during a difficult phase of the innings. He reached a well-made fifty and looked comfortable against both pace and spin for long periods.

Matt Renshaw was equally impressive.

After wickets kept falling around him, he absorbed the pressure and played some attractive shots to keep Australia’s innings alive. His fifty came at an important time and briefly gave Australia hope of pushing beyond the 230-run mark.

There were moments when the pair appeared capable of rebuilding the innings completely.

But every time Australia looked ready to launch a recovery, Pakistan found another breakthrough.

Pakistan’s Spin Attack Controlled the Match

While Minhas deserved the headlines, Pakistan’s other spinners played an important role as well.

Abrar Ahmed was difficult to score against and removed Alex Carey early before producing a beautiful delivery to dismiss Matt Renshaw. Shadab Khan maintained pressure from one end, forcing Australia to take risks.

The spin trio worked perfectly together.

Instead of allowing Australia to settle, they kept creating doubts in the minds of the batters. The result was a steady stream of wickets throughout the middle overs.

On a surface that offered turn and variable bounce, Pakistan’s spinners looked far more comfortable than their Australian counterparts.

Fast Bowlers Finish the Job

Once Australia’s lower order was exposed, Pakistan’s fast bowlers wrapped things up efficiently.

Shaheen Afridi delivered one of the best balls of the innings to bowl Tanveer Sangha with a perfect yorker. Haris Rauf then claimed the final wicket, ending Australia’s innings at exactly 200.

It was a complete bowling performance.

Pakistan never allowed Australia to dominate for an extended period, and that consistency ultimately made the difference.

What This Means for the Series

Winning the opening match always provides momentum, and Pakistan now have an early advantage in the ODI series.

More importantly, they have discovered a potential new match-winner in Arafat Minhas.

Australia will need to regroup quickly before the second ODI. Their batting lineup showed flashes of quality, but they struggled badly whenever Pakistan applied pressure through spin.

If they want to level the series, they will need stronger partnerships and a better approach against Pakistan’s slow bowlers.

For now, though, the spotlight belongs to Arafat Minhas.
