Stand in St Peter’s Square, look up at the top-floor windows of the Apostolic Palace, and it’s tempting to imagine the pope asleep in gilded rooms behind them. The reality is quieter and, in its way, far more interesting.

The traditional papal apartment does sit on the top floor of the Apostolic Palace, above the museums and offices that draw millions of visitors. But it isn’t one grand throne room. According to Vatican News, it’s a working home: a private study with the famous window from which the pope leads the Sunday Angelus, a library, a small private chapel, a bedroom, a dining room, and quarters for the household that keeps his day running.

What has changed in recent decades is that living there is now a choice, not a rule. And the two most recent popes made opposite decisions — each one revealing something about how he saw the office.

The Pope Who Said No

When Cardinal Jorge Mario Bergoglio was elected Pope Francis in 2013, he was shown the papal apartments and turned them down. Instead, he moved into Suite 201 of the Domus Sanctae Marthae, the Vatican guesthouse completed in 1996. His new living space was a fraction of the palace apartment.

His explanation was simple: he needed to live among people rather than alone. He stayed in that suite for the entire twelve years of his pontificate, until his death in April 2025. As the National Catholic Reporter noted, the decision was read around the world as a deliberate statement of simplicity.

The guesthouse itself is essentially a modest hotel — five floors, roughly 105 two-room suites and 26 single rooms, a lobby, a reception desk. It was originally built to house cardinals during a conclave, which is why the same building that shelters a sitting pope fills with electors when the papacy falls vacant.

Sealed With Wax Between Popes

The strangest chapter in the apartment’s life happens when a pope dies. The interval between pontificates is known in Church law as the sede vacante — “the seat being empty” — and it is governed by centuries of ritual.

One of the first acts is physical: the cardinal serving as Camerlengo seals the papal apartment. This is not a metaphor. After Pope Francis died on 21 April 2025, Cardinal Kevin Farrell, acting as Camerlengo, secured the doors. The pope’s personal seal — the Fisherman’s Ring — was defaced to prevent any document being forged in a dead pope’s name. A Famous Address That Needs Repairs

The gleaming facade hides an old building. Each time a new pope prepares to move in, the apartment tends to need serious work. When Benedict XVI took possession in 2005, accounts of the refit described outdated wiring and plumbing that had fallen well behind modern Italian standards. A general modernization was required before he could settle in with his large personal library.

It’s a detail the Vatican rarely advertises: behind an image built on timelessness sits a centuries-old residence that ages like any other home.

Leo XIV Moves Back In

Pope Leo XIV, the first pope from the United States, reversed his predecessor’s choice and returned to the traditional apartment — though not right away. After his election in May 2025 he stayed elsewhere in the Vatican while the long-empty rooms were renovated. According to Vatican News, the Holy See Press Office announced on 14 March 2026, roughly ten months after his election, that he had finally moved into the papal apartment, with its Angelus-window study, library and small chapel.

Even a return to tradition came with personal touches. Citing the pope’s brother John Prevost, the National Catholic Reporter reported that Leo had exercise equipment installed in his living space — and that he still prepares his own dinner.

Why It Matters

The residence a pope chooses is never only about comfort. Francis in a guesthouse suite and Leo in the restored palace apartment were each sending a message about authority, humility and continuity, and the world read those messages closely. The walls, the wax seal and the renovations are the physical record of an institution that is far more human — and far less gilded — than the postcard suggests.
