Everyday Intelligence Podcast Design System

My name is Kayley Register, and as part of my capstone senior project, I helped create a design system for my team’s podcast and website: Everyday Intelligence.

My primary role was to form the color palette, tagline, typography, and voice/tone of the design system.

Project Overview

The goal was to create a cohesive design system for our capstone project that really reflected what Everyday Intelligence is about: AI and education. My team started off using Figma to design the style guide and then transitioned over to Canva to better display our work.

Style Guide

The Problem

Color palette: I chose this color palette because I felt that it represented education well, while also adding a feminine touch. This podcast is women-run, so that was important to me.

Typography: The typography choice was professional but not overbearing. Playfair Display is beautiful as a header choice, in my opinion, and pairs with Source Sans Pro.

Tone and Voice: The tone and voice was set to encourage conversation while being inclusive and supportive. We never want to discourage someone.

Tagline: This was directed towards educators and students to empower them to learn about AI and become comfortable with it.

All of these things are elements that we represent on our podcast and are reflected in the Everyday Intelligence website, which works alongside the podcast.

Upon completing peer design critique, I realized that some of the pairings were too dark for the color palette and that the light magenta needed to be moved to a secondary color.

The Solution

I took this feedback and decided to make some changes: move light magenta to secondary, add white as a primary, and adjust the pairings so that we had no dark on dark pairings.

The typography critique encouraged more warmth for the body font option. I felt that Lato was perfect for this and still paired well with Playfair Display.

The updates and progression of the Design System from my end made for a well-rounded, polished site for Everyday Intelligence.

The tagline was updated as our audience changed through the semester- we are now geared more towards Gen Z students. “From curiosity to capability” it reads, which is the core of this capstone.
