The History of Fashion — by KNN LINKU

Fashion has been an important part of human civilization since the earliest days of mankind. Even when the people lived in the Caves, mountains, and forests, they showed a sense of fashion and personal expression.

History tells us that the early humans used leaves, buckles, animal skins, and natural materials to cover themselves(it was not only for fashion but also for saving from the heat and cold, too, before and in modern times). They often tried to match colors, styles, and designs, demonstrating that the desire to look attractive and different has always been exciting. As civilizations developed, fashion became more sophisticated and meaningful. tribal leaders wore clothing that distinguished them from members of the community. Leader, during the era of kings and emperors. Fashion became a symbol of power, status, and wealth. The clothing worn by rulers, Nobles, and common people reflected their social positions and helped shape cultural identities. In today`s modern world, fashion is far more than just a lifestyle or a way of dressing. It has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar global industry that influences economies, culture, and consumer behavior. Fashion affects how people express their personalities and interacts with society.

The fashion industry creates millions of jobs worldwide, including opportunities for designers, manufacturers, marketers, retailers, photographers, and many other professionals. As a result, fashion has become a popular academic discipline in universities around the world. Fashion design, merchandising, and fashion management programs attract students who aspire to build careers in this dynamic industry. Merchandising and fashion management programs attract students who aspire to build careers in this dynamic industry based on huge demand. Today, Fashion designers are in high demand, as brands continuously seek innovation, creativity, and new trends. Fashion remains one of the most powerful forms of self-expression and continues to play a significant role in shaping modern lifestyle and the global economy.

Fashion, the world has been very popular from the beginning of human civilization, even when the human spaces a living in the mountains or caves, in the jungle. From history, we learn that they were dry leaves or the battle of the trees… Even though they have some fashion sense. They try to match the colours to the top and bottom, at the size and designs of the buckle, and the dresses. From the early civilizations, the fashion became more popular, the leader of the tribe had a different dress than the other members, then the King’s era came, and it became more important, changing the fashion and the living standard. The earliest archeological evidence of fabric clothing is inferred from representations in figurines in the southern Levant, dated between 11,700 and 10,500 years ago. The surviving examples of woven cloth are linen from Egypt, dated 5000 BCE, while knotted or twisted flax fibers have been found as early as 7000 BCE. Clothes were not invented by a single named person. Instead, they were gradually developed by early hominid species — primarily Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens between 100,000 and 500,000 years ago as a survival adaptation to harsh ice ages and cold climates. Because animal skins and plant fibers decay over time, anthropologists rely on unique clues to determine exactly when clothing was invented. The most widely accepted scientific method involves tracing the evolution of the clothing louse, which can only survive in the seams of human garments. Genetic studies indicate these lice diverged from head lice between 83,000 and 170,000 years ago, marking when humans began wearing clothes regularly, Physical evidence of stitching appears around 75,000 years ago in southern Africa, where scientists found ancient bone awls used to pierce soft animal hides. By 30,000 to 40,000 years ago, both Neanderthals and early Homo sapiens were using carved bone needles to stitch fitted cloaks and garments together.

Now in this modern world, fashion is not only a lifestyle but also a billion-dollar business. It is not only how you look, but also controlling a huge economic value, too. Now, the department of fashion is a more popular subject at almost the maximum university around the world. Fashion designers are in very high demand.

The word “fashion” originates from the Latin word FACTIO, which means “a making” or “a doing”. Over time, this evolved into the Old French term FACON (meaning “appearance” or “manner”), which eventually entered Middle English as “fashion” to describe the prevailing style of dress and customs. The evolution of the word bridges the gap between the act of creation and the style we wear, for example, Latin (Facere / Factio): Rooted in the concept of craftsmanship, manufacturing, and bringing something into existence. Old French (Façon): Shifted focus to the physical build, shape, or the “way/manner” in which something was made. Middle English (Fashion): Adapted into English, it broadened in the 15th and 16th centuries to represent not just how clothes were made, but the prevailing trends, forms of self-expression, and societal customs. The global Readymade Garment (RMG) industry originated during the Industrial Revolution, with the first industrial garment factory established in New York (1831) and Paris (1829). Before the Industrial Revolution, textiles were made by hand in the “cottage industry”, where materials would be brought to homes and picked up when the textiles were finished. This allowed workers to decide their own schedules and was largely unproductive.

Europe’s garment and textile manufacturing took off during the Industrial Revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. Mechanization first developed in England and spread across the continent, shifting production from small artisanal workshops to massive factories. Today, the European Union is one of the leading producers and the second-largest exporter of apparel in the world. The industry is highly modern, focused on sustainability and high-end fashion. 11th — 17th Century: Textile production was mostly manual, relying on water power for yarn and cloth production, particularly in England and mainland Europe. 18th — 19th Century: The Industrial Revolution introduced new methods of mechanized weaving, dyeing, and spinning. Production shifted to factories, making cloth cheaper and more widely available. 19th Century (Modern Fashion): The concept of the modern fashion industry was established during the mid-19th century in Paris, led by designers like Charles Frederick Worth. Late 20th Century to Present: European production shifted away from standard mass-market clothing, which largely moved to Asian manufacturing hubs like Bangladesh and Vietnam. Today, Europe specializes heavily in High-end and luxury fashion. Technical textiles (medical, protective, and automotive applications) Sustainable and circular production. The majority of European clothing manufacturing (about 75% of the EU production value) is concentrated in five countries: Italy, Germany, France, Spain, Portugal, etc. These industries are primarily composed of small and medium-sized enterprises. China is the undisputed №1 country in the global garment and textile industry. Producing over one-third of the world’s apparel and exporting more than $300 billion in textiles and clothing annually, it remains the unmatchable powerhouse of global fashion supply chains. Then Vietnam, Bangladesh, and the rest of the Asian countries are for the low wages and worker availability. Now with the modern technology making the clothing industry with many new research and ideas, for example, the 3–3–3 rule for clothing is a minimalist styling and packing formula that limits your core wardrobe to just nine items: 3 tops, 3 bottoms, and 3 pairs of shoes. By choosing items that mix and match perfectly, you can create over 27 different outfit combinations effortlessly.

Starting from the very first, clothes were entirely natural, consisting of untreated animal skins, furs, leaves, grass, and bark. The global apparel industry generates around $1.8 trillion to $1.9 trillion in annual turnover. In Bangladesh specifically, the Ready-Made Garment (RMG) sector serves as the backbone of the economy, bringing in upwards of $45 billion to $50 billion in annual export value. Globally, the fashion and garment industry directly employs about 75 million factory workers. However, when including the entire value chain — such as agriculture (cotton), logistics, marketing, and retail — the industry directly and indirectly employs more than 430 million people worldwide.
