You, Lord, Are A Shield Around Me

We can face many challenging circumstances in our lives, though not many will face the kind of physical danger David described in this psalm. But most of us do periodically feel overwhelmed by circumstances. It could be problems with family, the job, the economy, illness, or conflict with others. Many things can cause us to worry and lose sleep, destroying the peace that we should have in Christ.

David’s response to his danger was to trust in God. He was convinced that whatever might come his way, the Lord was a shield around him, protecting him on all sides. He knew that God would answer his prayer, and he could sleep peacefully because he knew his life was in God’s hands. So he had no fear regardless of the number of enemies arrayed against him. David did not know what the outcome of his situation might be. But he did trust that God would take care of him through it all.

How do you develop that type of trust in the Lord? It does not generally happen all at once. But if we will trust Him in the little things in our lives, we will learn that He is faithful and trustworthy. And as we do, we will gain the confidence that He will help us in the more challenging times. That is what David did. He had trusted God to deliver him from the lion and the bear. So when the giant came along, he had no fear. With each encounter, his confidence in God grew. Trust in the Lord, even in the little things. And learn that He is a shield around you, even in the most challenging things you might face.
