Arc Raiders Story: The Day Earth Forgot to Breathe

Arc Raiders — fighting the Queen

Arc Raiders — fighting the Queen

This is the story of the Arc Raiders, offering context for our journey to Speranza. It is based on interpretations of in-game lore from Arc Raiders and The Finals, as well as insights gathered from various playtests I’ve participated in. If you’re new to the game, you can watch the game trailer here.

The Fall

Let me take you back to a time not long from now — a time when Earth stopped feeling like home.

Not because of climate change. Not because of war.

Because something was falling from the sky.

Metal. Machines. Monsters with no faces. They didn’t come to negotiate. They came to erase.

They called them ARC — Autonomous Recon Combatants, war machines that crash-landed like meteor showers, each one a death sentence. They didn’t knock. They didn’t explain. They just started… hunting.

The cities fell first.

Then the screams stopped.

And the world — our world — was buried under silence.

They weren’t entirely alien, though. Some say they bear human letters, serial codes, clues. Maybe they didn’t fall from space. Maybe they were sent back — from us, or what became of us.

The People Who Remained

While we mostly ran or perished, some did not.

Others scrambled underground — into subway stations, tunnels, bottomless holes with no sun and no promises.

Life underground became a dismal crawl. You exchanged daylight for subsistence. Hope for rationed basics.

Even in the darkness, not everyone stayed hidden. Some… went back up. They called themselves Raiders

Not soldiers. Not saviors. Just people with nothing left to lose and everything to take.

Above Ground, Below Mercy

Arc Raiders — Buried City

You are one of these Raiders — part explorer, part junkie, part maniac.

You scavenge for scraps. You fight like your life depends on it (because it does). You build weapons out of rust and prayers. You dodge, dive, and claw your way through open ruins where every shadow is a coin toss.

Because up here?

You are not just facing ARC. You’re up against other Raiders — hungry, fast, and just as desperate as you.

One wrong turn, one loud noise, one delay on your way to an extraction point — and it’s over.

And yet we go back. Why? Because sometimes, surviving means risking everything for just a little bit more.

And out there? The ruins whisper. Raider camps, now empty, once held the line against machines. Now they stand as rotting proof: we fought. We failed. But we remember.

The Machines Are Watching

ARC isn’t just killing for fun.

Some machines are small. Others look like someone gave a skyscraper legs and a grudge.

But they’re not random. Some flanks. Some trap. Some… apparently think.

Whispers are starting to spread — ARC wasn’t alien. It was built. Maybe even by us.

A rogue AI? A secret weapon gone haywire? A corporate experiment no one was meant to see?

Or maybe… something worse. Maybe the ARC were sent by those who left Earth — the ones who had the money, the power, the seat on the last shuttle. And now they want it back. Cleaned. Ready. Purged.

There exists a hacker organization named CNS spamming out cryptic messages over ancient comm towers.

“Seek the truth beyond the walls”

Sound familiar? If you’ve played The Finals, you know CNS from the VR games where contestants chase fame.

Guess what?

While they’re playing pretend up there… we’re dying for real down here.

Arc Raiders and The Finals might be two games. But this is one story.

Beauty in Broken Things

But here’s the strangest part.

Even in this deathtrap of a surface… something beautiful remains.

There is Dam, now poisoned and infested with bots, but once a location where Raiders held the line.

There is Buried City, which is half-lost under sand, its alleys still echoing with the memories of those who didn’t make it.

And there’s Acerra Spaceport, where humans once dreamed of leaving Earth — now a rotting dream with loot buried deep beneath its bones. Along its crumbling walls, graffiti whispers truths too bitter to erase: “Only the rich leave”, “Make room for all.” These aren’t just scrawls — they’re accusations. People were left behind. Not by chance. By choice.

It’s a wasteland. But it’s ours.

Speranza — The Last Spark

Arc Raiders — Speranza

Down below, life tries to patch itself together in Speranza — a carved-out fragment of what used to be Toledo, Italy. It’s not a city. It’s a stubborn refusal to give up. Traders, fixers, medics — they all have secrets and histories here. You’ll need them all.

Tian Wei will build you guns so mean, you’ll feel sorry for the metal you aim them at.

Apollo grenades are more “fireworks with trauma” than “tools.”

Shani gives you gear that lets you fly, if only for a second.

And Lance heals you — if credits are in order.

But if you want to stay? You prove yourself. Or you’re out. We all have our motives. So do you.

So What Now?

Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders

Arc Raiders isn’t just about loot. It’s not even about killing ARC.

It is about why one returns upwards. About secrets embedded in wreckage. About buried truths under older wars and more recent cover-ups.

It’s about risk. About freedom. About choosing fight over fear.

Because maybe the ARC aren’t here to conquer. Maybe they’re here to reclaim. To pave the way for a second landing. For the return of those who left us behind.

Because perhaps, perhaps just perhaps, something larger is occurring.

Because maybe, just maybe, there’s something bigger going on.

And the only way to find out… is to climb.

So ask yourself this: Are you the kind of person who waits for safety? Or the kind who charges into chaos with a half-broken rifle and a full heart?

Either way, ARC’s not waiting. And the sky is falling.
