For our latest investigation, an original research article synthesizing 28 male-specific studies on how fragrance chemicals affect the male endocrine system, we went deep into the NHANES data, the biomonitoring literature, and the population-level testosterone tracking that most men have never seen.
What we found was not vague. It was measured, replicated, and dose-dependent.
Study 1: Population-Level Testosterone Is Declining ~1% Per Year, and It’s Not Because Men Are Getting Older
This is the study that reframes the entire “low T” conversation from individual health to population-level trend.
A landmark study by Travison et al. (2007) published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (**PMID: 17062768) tracked testosterone levels across three cohorts of American men (1987, 1995, 2004), matched by age and BMI**. The finding:
- Testosterone declined approximately 1% per year across the entire study period
- A 50-year-old man in 2004 had a median total testosterone of ~391 ng/dL versus ~501 ng/dL for a 50-year-old in 1987
- This was independent of aging: men at the same age, same BMI, in different decades, had progressively lower testosterone
- The decline persisted after controlling for obesity, smoking, and other lifestyle factors
This wasn’t men getting older. This was men becoming less hormonally male at the same age, across an entire population, over two decades. A 22% decline in median testosterone at 50, in 17 years.
The cause isn’t settled. But environmental endocrine disruptors keep surfacing in the data. And one chemical class in particular, phthalates, shows up with striking consistency in studies examining male hormonal health.
Study 2: NHANES Data from 3,027 Males Shows DEHP Phthalate Exposure Is Associated with a 29% Testosterone Reduction in Boys Aged 6–12, With Dose-Dependent Effects Persisting in Men 40–60
If Travison shows the population trend, this study shows a chemical that tracks with it.
A 2014 study published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology & Metabolism (**PMID: 25121464) analyzed NHANES 2011–2012 data from 3,027 males across all age groups.** The researchers measured urinary DEHP metabolite concentrations and correlated them with serum testosterone. The findings were age-specific and striking:
- Boys aged 6–12: DEHP metabolite exposure was associated with a 29% reduction in testosterone, the largest effect size in any age group. This is during the developmental window when testosterone is critical for pubertal programming.
- Men aged 40–60: Significant inverse associations between DEHP metabolites and testosterone persisted, with dose-dependent relationships at the highest exposure quartiles.
- A follow-up in ***Frontiers in Endocrinology* (2022) extended the finding: DEHP metabolites were associated with adult-onset hypogonadism (clinically low testosterone) in men over 40, with odds ratios up to 1.86×** at the highest exposure levels.
DEHP is primarily a food-contact phthalate. But the fragrance phthalate — diethyl phthalate (DEP), shares the same anti-androgenic mechanism: it interferes with testosterone synthesis in Leydig cells. And DEP is what makes your cologne’s scent last longer. It’s in 97% of Americans tested by the CDC, with fragrance products identified as a primary exposure route.
The bridge: a biomonitoring study in Environmental Health Perspectives (**PMC4097177) found that cologne and perfume users have 2.92× higher monoethyl phthalate (MEP) concentrations, **MEP being the primary metabolite of the cologne phthalate DEP. Your cologne isn’t just a scent. It’s a measurable chemical exposure pathway to a compound class that is inversely associated with testosterone in 3,027-male NHANES analyses.
What These Two Studies Mean Together
Individually, each study is significant. Together, they paint a picture that the grooming industry would rather you not see:

The testosterone decline is real and independent of aging. The phthalate-testosterone association is measured in large-scale NHANES data. And cologne use specifically elevates the cologne-relevant phthalate metabolite by nearly 3×. Three data points from independent research traditions (endocrinology, toxicology, biomonitoring) converging on a chain that runs from your cologne bottle to your Leydig cells.
These are associations, not proven causation at individual exposure levels. But the dose-dependent pattern across multiple studies makes the signal difficult to dismiss.
