A Letter from a Street Classroom to the World
Dearest Gentle Reader,
A Letter from a Street Classroom to the World
Dearest Gentle Reader,
We write to you from the neglected corners of our not-so-typical classrooms — a street school classroom with no walls and no certainty. As you pass the dusty street corners in the centre of Delhi, the capital city, you can see how busy it is. We may be seen huddled together around our professors, grinning widely and attempting to absorb as much knowledge as possible, as our most valuable asset. This is our classroom. Our desks are the cracked pavement, our chairs the embrace of Mother Earth, our ceiling is the vast and silent ever-changing sky, and our blackboard is whatever surface we can find. We are the students and teachers of Pehchaan The Street School, where learning fights survive amid the chaos of our daily realities but never surrender. This letter is our story, our request, and our hope for a world that often looks away, and for those who might work towards that change.
The Beginning: A Classroom Without a Roof
Our classroom was established as a social initiative in 2015, in a world where formal education is often a privilege rather than a right. We are the providers of our families during the week and become students on weekends. Some of us had to start working so young that we barely knew how to talk. Still, we get each other. We’re in this together, facing the same tough breaks, all hoping for something better. Every day, we fight for our education — bit by bit, word by word.
Every weekend, we meet up with our teachers at Pehchaan The Street School. They give up their own time for us, no questions asked. They bring along a worn-out bag filled with notebooks and short pencils. To some, it may seem basic, but to us, it means the world — a precious chance in disguise. They tell us that learning can flourish even in difficult circumstances if one has the zeal, and that our value is not weighed by our backgrounds but by our true potential and hard work that can change what we are destined for to something more beautiful. Passing vehicles, the bustling sounds of markets, and occasionally the urge to work for a meal disrupt our study sessions. Still, we gather, because learning is vital for survival
Learning in the Open: Challenges and Triumphs.
Our classroom faces challenges that might be unknown to many. Rain can just flush this all away, a day’s worth of work, and the sun can scorch our backs. Hunger isn’t just about the rumbling stomach — it is a void that scrambles your brain. And fear? Sure, people laugh about it sometimes, but it never really leaves. It’s a quiet reminder of just how exposed we really are… We use one textbook between five, and pass it from hand We share one textbook among five, passing it from hand to hand. When paper runs out, we write equations in the dust.. In this open classroom, we are more than students; we are warriors off to war and the last hope for our already suffering families.
The Lessons We Learn
In addition to books, the world around us also teaches us things. Every person who walks by offers a fresh perspective, and every challenge imparts a fresh insight or recollection. Our education is raw and blunt. We do not memorize facts for exams; we associate knowledge with hope, to stand strong even when the possibilities look too bleak to keep going. Math helps us count our pay, stretch a tight budget, and imagine a future where numbers mean more than just scraping by. Science? It’s in the smallest and neglected lives — right there in rainwater settling on the surface of leaves, ants climbing up the cracks of concrete walls, or the stars shining across the night sky. And liberal arts lives on, too, in the songs we sing about courage, the traditions we hand down, and the stories we share when life gets tough.
A Teacher’s Devotion- The greatest motivator:
Our teacher is our guiding light. When no one else does, she has faith in us. She keeps us grounded when the world gets too loud. Honestly, she’s the reason we don’t just take education for granted — we see it’s something you fight for. When life throws curveballs, she reminds us we matter. Her lessons are not just about academic wisdom. She talks about doing what’s right, not giving up, and standing strong.

The World Outside: Indifference and Hope
Sometimes, people pass by and sigh about our situation. They see us as a token of social negligence or as a problem too big to solve. We remember all of them — the ones who looked away and the ones who actually cared. So, don’t act like we’re invisible. We are here, advocating for real change. This is a part of a much greater fight against injustice that keeps people from moving forward, not simply our problem. To be honest, we’re still discovering who we are. We see a society where all children can learn without fear and where schools protect us rather than make things worse.
Sweetness between the struggle:
And in between these moments of sorrow and struggle are some beautiful ones, where we become a part of the festivities and celebration, like recently, when our ED Head Ankit visited the Indraprastha centre to celebrate his son’s birthday about 10 people showed up to join him. Their son had his cake with us and handed out essentials to 150 students — things like apples, chips, Frooti, chocolates, and pencil kits. It serves as a helpful reminder that birthdays may be much more than just celebrations; everyone, especially the children, can have genuine moments of compassion and joy. You feel appreciated, cared for, and a part of something greater — a family that never wavers — in moments like this and stands by you.
And this Holi is the perfect time to continue in that attitude. To make sure that our pupils arrive at school ready, self-assured, and grinning, just like they did on that birthday celebration, Pehchaan The Street School is launching its Holi Campaign — School Chalein Kit as the new school year begins around Holi. A Plea for Change
This letter is not just a story; it’s a request. We question you, the reader, to see us — not as victims, but as survivors and fighters. Invest in our education, not out of charity or to post about on Instagram, but for all as a basic right, not just for those who can afford it. Support teachers who light up the darkest corners. Endorse systems that don’t leave the poor trapped in poverty — do not create an underprivileged class already submerged by today’s overclass.
When one child is not educated, the world is diminished by a part: whole innovation paths that could have blossomed into beautiful flowerbeds instead wither and die in missed opportunities. Art goes undiscovered, new thinking never done finds no outlet to express itself. And the solutions are gone- lost without anyone even knowing they existed.
Picture this: every student steps into class, grabs a seat, and right away feels like they belong — not just to learn, but to dream big. That’s the future worth fighting for. Band-aid solutions or shortcuts that only cover up the real issues are not what we’re here for. We’re creating something enduring, imparting knowledge and abilities that children will carry with them throughout their lives. That is what truly molds their identity and abilities.
Despite great odds, we built up something beautiful. We learn to stand steadfast, even when things look unclear before; we are brave enough to dream. We picture a world where our stories spark real change, not just pity. We’re done letting the world decide who we are. We’re the ones shaping what comes next — because we don’t just sit back and watch. We dream big, we get our hands dirty, we take charge. Sometimes our classroom is the sidewalk, not a fancy lecture hall. Our dreams? They are higher than any tower, and we continue to climb no matter how difficult things become.
Everything is a little easier since we are together in this. We are shaped by every book we pick up, every lesson we learn, and every small deed of kindness. Hope always triumphs over the difficult things in our classroom. That speaks much about how resilient individuals are.
Yours truly,
The students of Pehchaan, the street school
