The 2010s On: Constantly Changing Manufacturing Landscape

Digital technologies started emerging as potential solutions, though AI wasn’t yet a key player.
Fast forward to today, and manufacturing looks radically different. Now, manufacturers face a post-pandemic world marked by trade wars, workforce shortages, and the rise of AI.
The Call for Sustainable Manufacturing Throughout the 2010s, sustainability became a growing focus for global manufacturing. Processes emphasizing reuse, remanufacturing, and recycling led to the rise of circular economies. Sustainable strategies around energy efficiency, waste management, and low-carbon technology were adopted by companies, but change was slow. It wasn’t until global events like the COVID-19 pandemic and mounting pressure from governments and consumers that manufacturers began accelerating their shift toward sustainability.
Effects of Global Crises on Service Delivery
The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted manufacturing in unprecedented ways. Previously stable supply chains faced shortages, skyrocketing prices, and operational delays. This disruption pushed manufacturers to adopt flexible digital solutions such as cloud computing, advanced automation, and real-time IoT systems. Remote collaboration became necessary, and companies had to adapt or risk falling behind.
These changes aligned with geopolitical shifts. Trade barriers, particularly due to China’s complex relations with the U.S., forced manufacturers to reconsider global supply chains. Combined with the shrinking populations in many Western countries, the future of manufacturing began to look very different.
Resiliency became a focus, with firms investing in reshoring or near-shoring operations to regain control. Simultaneously, AI’s democratization allowed businesses to handle complex data environments more easily, supercharging operations in previously unimaginable ways.
