Naturaleza News/Colombia Reduces Deforestation by 17% Between 2024 and 2025

Colombia — which ranks eighth globally in terms of forest loss — managed to reduce deforestation by 17% between 2024 and 2025, one of the most significant decreases in the region, according to a report by the University of Maryland’s GLAD laboratory, Global Forest Watch, and WRI.

Brazil, for its part, reduced deforestation by 42%, and Peru by 8%, while globally the reduction was 36% by the end of 2025, according to the report published by the specialized publication Mongabay.

The report attributes forest loss in Latin America to agricultural expansion and demand for raw materials such as livestock, soy, palm oil, and minerals.

The increase in fires, driven by the climate crisis, as a critical factor in the degradation of tropical forests — where 94% of human-caused deforestation occurs — was another factor influencing deforestation.

In the 2024–2025 period, the world lost 4.3 million hectares of primary forests, equivalent to more than 11 soccer fields per minute.
