13:00:00 One time. One 'o'clock.

Many alternate realities. Many overlapping memories.

Or at least, that’s what people thought.

According to the news, broadcast, classroom, and legal documentary, history had been vandalized by rogue time travelers. They were blamed for everything that no longer made sense.

• The war that people were convinced never happened.
• The historical photographs that people swore had once looked different.
• The countries that seemed to have changed borders overnight.

Scientists disappeared after being accused of building illegal devices. Leaders were impeached for allegedly rewriting elections. Historians vanished.

They were criminals who had supposedly rewritten the past.

The truth was: there was no such thing as time travel.

The Brothers invented it. A perfect lie to cover their tracks.

The massacre? — A rogue traveler prevented peace talks. The famine? — Someone messed up with food distributions. The genocide? — That happened in an alternate timeline. People remembering the wrong version.

Give people an impossible explanation, and they’ll stop searching for an ordinary culprit. We didn’t merely tell them. We arranged the dots so they could connect them.

No one investigated the present while everyone argued about the past. Because history hasn’t changed. We manufactured them. We edited reality until the lie became the truth.

It took neurologists, psychologists, linguists, historians, data scientists, actors, software engineers, behavioral experts, and economists working together to rewrite people’s memories.

Don’t get us wrong. We do have empathy. It was one of the job requirements. We must be able to show feelings and compassion while telling convincing lies.

Maybe you’d call us psychopaths.

The Brothers called us The Editors.

At 13:00, we decided what millions of people would remember tomorrow. And today’s edit was simple. By tomorrow, people will have memories that children born during the pandemic were carriers of a mutated deadly pathogen.
