The Many Ways Fear Finds You: A Friendly Guide to Horror

Horror films have always been popular.
Despite the chills, this genre continues to find its dedicated fans.
Some people queue up for horror with popcorn and a grin.
Others make rules:
never watch alone,
keep the lights on,
keep the volume low.
Then there are the cushion-peepers, peeking through fingers at the exact wrong moment, and the poor souls who take the film home — jumping at creaks for days, replaying that one corridor shot in their heads.
However, you come to it, horror is a social ritual: a dare, a story, and a ride we agree to take together.
Do you remember your first horror film?
Mine was The Evil Dead.
For days, I slept with the lights on, avoided looking out the window, and imagined monsters under my bed, and still craved more. That’s when the genre hooked me.
Here’s the thing: fear has been baked into cinema almost from the start.
In 1896, magician-director Georges Méliès made Le Manoir du diable (The Haunted Castle) — often credited as one of the first horror films — a playful three-minute parade of bats, devils, and disappearing tricks.
From there, the genre learned new languages of dread.
