Options Trading in the UK for Complete Beginners: Apple Calls, Interactive Brokers & How to Actually File Your Taxes

Everything I wish I had known when I first saw that viral Apple options chart

I’ve already explained the full options trading example in detail in my previous post:

👉 **A Beginner-Friendly Guide to Options Trading: Real Examples, Risks & Everything You Need to Know**

In that post, I broke down:

  • What call and put options actually are
  • The famous Apple example (buying shares vs buying one call option for £500)
  • How you can make £1,500 profit (300% return) if Apple goes from $220 to $240
  • The detailed profit calculation
  • The biggest risk — your option can expire completely worthless
  • Time decay, expiration dates, and why 1 contract controls 100 shares

This current post picks up where that one left off. Now that you understand the basics, let’s talk about what to do next as a UK beginner: which broker to use, how taxes work, and the exact step-by-step process for filing your Self Assessment.

2. Can You Trade Options in Trading 212?

No. Trading 212’s Stocks ISA does not support traditional listed options trading (as of April 2026). You’ll need a separate broker.

3. Best UK Broker for Real Options Trading

Interactive Brokers (IBKR) is the top recommendation for most beginners who want real Apple call/put options.

Why IBKR?

  • Real listed options on US exchanges
  • Very low commissions
  • Strong tools and demo account
  • FCA-regulated

Note: You cannot hold options inside a Stocks & Shares ISA — they go in a normal taxable account.

4. UK Tax Year — Important Dates You Must Know

The UK tax year always runs from 6 April to 5 April the following year.

  • 2025/26 Tax Year: 6 April 2025–5 April 2026 (just ended)
  • 2026/27 Tax Year: 6 April 2026–5 April 2027 (current tax year)

When to download your IBKR report:

  • Best time: Right after 5 April each year (e.g., now in late April 2026 for the 2025/26 tax year).
  • You can download reports anytime, but the cleanest full-year report is available immediately after the tax year ends.

Self Assessment Filing Deadlines:

  • Online tax return must be submitted by 31 January following the end of the tax year.
  • For 2025/26 tax year → deadline is 31 January 2027.
  • Pay any tax due by the same date.

5. Complete Step-by-Step Tax Filing Guide

Step 1: Download Your IBKR Activity Report (Right After 5 April)

  1. Log into IBKR Client Portal.
  2. Go to Performance & ReportsStatementsActivity Statement.
  3. Set Custom dates: 06/04/2025 to 05/04/2026.
  4. Choose Quicken (QFX) format (best) or CSV.
  5. Download and save safely.

Step 2: Calculate Your Gains/Losses

Go to **cgttaxtool.uk**

  • Upload your QFX file
  • Select tax year 2025/26
  • Get instant summary of gains, losses, and tax due.

Step 3: File Your Self Assessment on HMRC.gov.uk

Enter summary totals from the calculator into the SA108 Capital Gains section. You don’t need to list every single trade.

CGT Basics (2025/26 and 2026/27):

  • Annual tax-free allowance: £3,000
  • Tax rate on gains above allowance: 18% (basic rate) or 24% (higher rate)

6. What Happens If You Make Losses?

Losses are excellent in options trading:

  • They offset gains in the same year.
  • Unused losses can be carried forward indefinitely to future years.
  • Always report losses in the year they occur so you can use them later.

Example: £12,000 gains — £7,500 losses = £4,500 net → use brought-forward losses + £3,000 allowance → potentially £0 tax.

The calculator handles all of this automatically.

Final Tips for Complete Beginners

  • Start with IBKR’s demo/paper trading account.
  • Keep all reports for at least 6 years.
  • Options trading is high risk — only use money you can afford to lose.
  • When in doubt, consult an accountant.

Ready to start? Open a demo account at Interactive Brokers today and experiment with the Apple call example.
