📢 Trust as Infrastructure (Part 2): When Truth Becomes a Business Model, Trust Collapses

One of the most fragile guardrails in any democracy is information integrity.

Not because truth is subjective — but because attention has become profitable.

When outrage pays, accuracy loses. When speed beats verification, trust erodes quietly 🧵

This isn’t a cultural problem. It’s a design problem.

When media systems are allowed to:

• monetize misinformation
• amplify disinformation
• reward engagement over evidence

they don’t just distort facts — they undermine institutional legitimacy 🏛️

People stop trusting:

• public health guidance 🩺
• election results 🗳️
• courts, regulators, and oversight bodies ⚖️

Not because those institutions suddenly failed — but because the information environment stopped protecting them.

Free expression matters. Deeply. But free expression without guardrails is not freedom — it’s market capture of attention by the loudest, angriest, or best-funded voices 📈

Democracies don’t collapse when people disagree. They collapse when people can no longer agree on what is real.

Trust doesn’t disappear overnight. It dissolves — one distorted headline, one viral lie, one unchallenged narrative at a time ⏳

If we want to rebuild trust in institutions, we have to stop pretending that truth can survive in systems designed to sell outrage.

Information is infrastructure. And right now, too many democracies are running it without maintenance.
