How to Get the Most Value from Your Travel Rewards

In my previous post, I discussed how I got my SAS EuroBonus points. So now the question arises, what is the best way to spend these points?

There are two ways to use your points. You can pay completely with points (excluding the booking fee) or partially with points. The easiest way to determine the value of a point is by using the formula:

(Price of the flight — Booking fee) / Amount of points.

The example below shows that paying partially with points is half as efficient as paying fully with points.

Example: Oslo to Stavanger, cheapest flight 84,28 euro.

Completely with points:

84,28–20,02 booking fee = 64,26.- Euro 64,26.- / 5000 Points = 0,012852 Euro per point

Partially with Points:

10585 Points + 26.90 booking fee = 0,005421 Euro per point

By using this calculation, we can see that paying partially with points is a bad idea. I recommend only using points if you can pay for the whole flight.

What is the best Eurobonus deal?

We can use the same formula as before to determine what type of flight will yield the best result. As you can see the value of the points varies largely.

The points of the flight are often rounded off to a whole number, say 5000, 10000, 15000 or more. This has a big impact on the euro’s per point.

It is therefore best to use your points on short in-land flights, which cost ‘just’ 5000 points.
