Differences in Finland and South Asian culture

Life in Finland can be full of surprises, especially when you’re coming from outside the European Union. I arrived in Finland from South Asia in August 2023, and the experience of exploring this unique country has been nothing short of exhilarating.

One of the most striking differences is the winter season. Having never experienced snow before, the Finnish winter was a shock, but it also made me appreciate the summer — something I never particularly enjoyed in my home country. This past year, I’ve discovered Finland is an amazing place to live, with its distinct seasons adding charm.

Beyond the weather, there are many differences between Finland and South Asia. The architecture, for example, is a direct response to Finland’s harsh winters. Buildings are well-insulated to protect against the cold and wind, making indoor life much more comfortable. In contrast, South Asian buildings are designed for long, hot summers and are often not as insulated or airy.

Another noticeable difference is in the local produce. South Asia’s warm climate blesses it with juicy, flavorful fruits and vegetables. While Finland may not have the same variety of sweet produce, it excels in unmatched-flavor berries.

Cultural differences are also evident in social interactions. South Asians are known for their warmth and hospitality, often engaging in lively conversations with strangers. In contrast, Finns are more reserved, preferring quiet and only speaking when necessary. This difference is particularly noticeable in public transportation, where in South Asia, travel often turns into a social event, while in Finland, silence is the norm.

Entertainment and sports also highlight the contrasts between the two regions. South Asia’s film industry, with giants like Bollywood and Lollywood, produces many films each year, drawing audiences worldwide with its rich desi content. Finland, on the other hand, places a strong emphasis on sports, particularly swimming and climbing. Finnish children are taught to swim at an early age, a practice not as common in South Asia.

Overall, my time in Finland has been a year of discovery and adaptation. I have found joy in the differences and similarities between these two diverse cultures. Finland has proven to be an exceptional place to live, offering a unique blend of natural beauty, cultural richness, and a peaceful way of life.
