Watercolor Sailboat Fabric is Trending This Summer — and Here’s Where to Find It

If you’ve been scrolling through fabric shops lately, you’ve probably noticed it: sailboat prints are everywhere this summer. And not the stiff, clipart-style boats of the past — we’re talking loose, expressive watercolor sailboats with that hand-painted quality that makes a piece of fabric feel like art.

I’m Erika Catalán, the designer behind Brezo Art Design, a Madrid-based surface pattern studio. And this season, I’ve been deep in nautical territory.

The design:

My latest addition to the Brezo Art Design collection is a watercolor sailboat print that I’ve been working on for a while. The boats are painted in cobalt blue and ochre yellow — that classic Mediterranean combination that feels both timeless and fresh. Each sail catches the light differently. Some boats lean into the wind, others sit calmly on an invisible sea. The repeat is loose and playful, not too structured, not too chaotic.

It’s the kind of fabric that makes you want to sew something immediately.

What it’s perfect for:

I designed this one with a lot of different makers in mind:

• Quilters looking for a nautical focal fabric that works with navy, white and yellow coordinates
• Parents decorating a coastal nursery or kids’ bedroom — the scale works beautifully for children’s spaces

The palette

Cobalt blue, cerulean, sky blue, ochre yellow and crisp white. It photographs beautifully in natural light and prints with that characteristic watercolor softness — you can see the brushstrokes, the pigment blooms, the hand of the artist in every repeat.
