What Happened at Microsoft Build 2025?

Microsoft Build 2025 was not just a technology event, but the first major example of how artificial intelligence (AI) is beginning to transform the software world. There were major announcements for developers, enterprise software teams, and even individual coders.

Let’s take a simple look at Microsoft’s most striking AI developments, GitHub Copilot’s new task-based capabilities and future development tools, and see how these changes will make your work easier.

Microsoft’s Big Move

Microsoft’s approach is to integrate AI into almost every product. From Azure to Visual Studio Code, from Windows to GitHub, AI is everywhere. I’ve looked into it a little bit for you, and it’s not just at the level of “we’ve added AI”, it’s really to make your work easier.

GitHub Copilot is Now a “Peer Programmer”!

Copilot used to give you suggestions while writing code (pair programmer). Now Copilot can complete tasks you give it from start to finish (peer programmer).

**You can assign a GitHub issue (bug or feature request) directly to Copilot.**

Copilot takes that task, writes code, tests it and even creates a pull request.

This feature is now available for all Copilot Enterprise and Pro+ users.

Which Tasks can you use it for?

Bug fixes New feature additions Code refactoring Test writing Documentation improvement

Complex architectural decisions are still up to you. Copilot shines in mid-level technical tasks.

Copilot Tuning: AI Assistant for Your Company

What does that mean? The normal Copilot is trained with general knowledge. But with Copilot Tuning, you can create a custom assistant that learns your company’s specific terminology, workflows, code writing style and internal standards.

Agentic Web The Future of the Internet

What is this in simple terms? An AI agent can behave like this: it can read and understand websites and take actions on your behalf.

For example, you have an e-commerce site. With **NLWeb,** AIs can place automatic orders, customer support chatbots can make real transactions, inventory management is automated.

Microsoft also demonstrated that agents can now work standalone;

Azure AI Foundry & Windows AI Foundry: AI Development Made Easy

What is Azure AI Foundry?

Microsoft’s powerful platform for developing AI models and agents. Particularly noteworthy ones:

  • Integration of different AI models (including Grok)
  • Compatible with security (Defender), identity management (Entra ID) and data governance (Purview). (I have mentioned it very briefly below)
  • Possibility to run models on local devices with Foundry Local.

Native Development with Windows AI Foundry

In Windows 11, you can now train and run AI models on your own device. Thus:

  • Cloud dependency is decreasing
  • Performance is improving
  • Development becomes faster and more customizable.

It’s a big advantage, especially for engineers working on the go or teams doing offline development. :)

Microsoft Discovery: The Age of AI in Scientific Discovery

How Scientific Research Will Change?

From designing experiments to discovering new materials, Microsoft Discovery aims to speed up the process.

There was a demo at Build 2025:

Discovery proposed a new molecule for stainless coolant production. This process could have taken months with traditional methods, with AI it was completed in a few hours.

A major innovation for those working in the pharmaceutical, materials or chemical industry.

Open Source: Microsoft’s Big Gesture

Windows Subsystem for Linux (WSL) — tool for running Linux on Windows and GitHub Copilot Chat Extension — AI chat extension for VS Code is now fully open source.

The ability for developers to contribute to these tools is an important development in terms of creating a more transparent and customizable development environment and increasing Community-supported sustainability.

Edit: New Command Line Editor Inspired by MS-DOS

Microsoft unveiled Edit, a new command-line text editor that pays homage to the old DOS editor.

  • Modeless (without mode switching) operation
  • It includes modern features inspired by VS Code
  • It offers a similar experience to Vim/Emacs users.

It’s a nostalgic but useful alternative, especially for developers working through the terminal.

Data Management and AI: Cosmos DB, Fabric and SQL Server 2025

Microsoft has made some important integrations to facilitate data management in AI projects;

  • Microsoft Fabric unifies data processing and AI analytics on a single platform.
  • Vector search support added in SQL Server 2025: It makes it easier to work with unstructured data (text, images).
  • Cosmos DB became ideal for data storage in RAG (Retrieval Augmented Generation) scenarios.

If you want to develop an AI application, data management is now much simpler.

Data Security: How to Ensure Security in AI?

Microsoft offers three main layers of security;

Azure Purview, organizes and protects data. Defender for Cloud, protects AI systems against cyber threats. Entra ID, controls who can log in and what they can access.

Microsoft Build 2025 showed that AI is moving from being just a tool to becoming a real business partner. Developers and companies that adopt AI early will gain a big advantage. From GitHub Copilot to Azure AI Foundry, from custom AI for your company to scientific discovery.
