Behaviour of Idle or less-occupied individuals.

“Why Idle Time Increases Anxiety: A Cognitive Neuroscience Perspective”
Periods of inactivity don’t feel neutral. For the brain, they often become highly active spaces of self-generated anxiety, future simulation, and cognitive overload.
Cognitive neuroscience research suggests that when external demands are low, networks involved in self-reflection and mental simulation become more active. This can be useful for planning, but it can also contribute to rumination and anxiety when the future feels uncertain.
I have consistently researched psychology, the brain, and neuroscience as part of my studies.
I have read numerous articles about the psychology of people focused on work, trauma, or illness. However, I wondered: what about those who are idle, waiting for a job or the start of a new semester? This question became more relevant as I completed my bachelor’s and awaited for my master’s program.
So here are the thoughts that were incurring and these were all about the anxiety of getting a day-to-day decision made on my application, the thoughts of nervousness about how I will be able to cope with a new culture , study pattern, and peer pressure of doing better and moreover, living all by myself.
So this is how I curbed my thoughts and fixed a routine in 4 simple steps and would like to contribute. Here it goes:
- Fix your sleep: The first and foremost thing is to take a sufficient night sleep( while maintaining a period of 7–8 hours). While trying to form a routine, try to curb the number of hours of doomscrolling before you sleep. This will help to reduce overthink much.
- Rituals for morning routine: Once you wake up, after following the number 1. step for a few days, again do not touch your phone in terms of checking your emails, your calls(unless they are important), and social media, of course. Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and go out in the sunlight while keeping in mind to avoid direct eye contact with the sun. This will keep your brain balanced and in present, that make your focus more towards daily activities.
- The time you sit idle in the day: When you sit idle in a situation where you actually have nothing to do. Your overthinking spikes and creates imaginary situations. At this moment, you will feel much more anxious than at any other time in the day. Drink as much water as you can, try to feel the present situation while recognizing your own body and mind. Listen to soft music rather than loud music, as it can make you more anxious.
- Avoid guilty situations: You will also experience guilt for not doing anything where you know you are in the middle of decisions which are going to impact your life. So you will be stuck in a loop of past, present and future(imaginary thoughts) situations where you will be pinpointed at embarrassment the most. To fix on it, try to go out for a while with your family or friends, talk about any other topic rather than your situation, so as to avoid sensitivity.
Hope you liked my experience articulated in a short, read-worthy article.
Thank you.
