Afoosha Oromo: My Perspective on Reviving Community in the Digital Age

In the heart of an ancient village nestled between lush hills, the rhythm of life unfolded at a slower pace. The villagers, connected by centuries-old traditions, exchanged news, goods, and stories through close-knit networks — word of mouth, communal gatherings, and bustling marketplaces. Every day, as the sun began to dip below the horizon, people would gather at the village square, a place where knowledge and goods were traded in equal measure. Farmers, traders, artisans, and elders would converge, offering not just wares but wisdom.

The exchange of information was an organic process, flowing through personal interactions, handshakes, and shared experiences. Through my lens, I’ve seen Afoosha emerge to meet this need — a new Oromo community group recently formed in Dallas, Texas, dedicated to bridging the old and new ways of communication. Inspired by the cultural richness of the Oromo people, Afoosha serves as a modern village square, a place where members gather, both in person and virtually, to share experiences, provide support, and strengthen community ties.

Afoosha combines the speed and convenience of today’s digital tools with the personal connection of traditional gatherings. Through social media and messaging platforms like WhatsApp, members can stay connected, share news, and coordinate community events. But beyond the screens, Afoosha also fosters face-to-face gatherings where members celebrate traditions, pass on cultural values, and build a sense of unity among Oromo families in Dallas.

One of Afoosha’s central traditions is a monthly gathering where members come together to eat, drink, and share in the joy of each other’s company. These regular meet-ups strengthen bonds, creating a warm environment for members to connect, reminisce, and build new memories as a community.
