The biggest weakness in shipping container security isn’t the lock. It’s the inability to prove what happened.

Every day, millions of shipping containers cross the globe carrying products worth billions of dollars. To protect these shipments, companies rely on locks, security seals, serialized labels, holograms, and other tamper-evident solutions. Their purpose is simple: make it obvious if someone has opened the container.

But here’s the problem.

A lock only prevents unauthorized access — it doesn’t prove that the container was never opened. If someone manages to unlock it, access the contents, and lock it again, there may be no evidence that anything ever happened. The same applies to many security seals. They can be cut off, replaced with convincing counterfeits, and leave inspectors believing everything is exactly as it should be.

In other words, today’s solutions suffer from two fundamental weaknesses. First, they often cannot reliably prove that a container has been opened. Second, they cannot prove that the seal itself is the original one and not a counterfeit replacement.

At TAGBASE, we’re exploring a different approach.

By combining our cryptographically secure NFC technology with NTAG424 DNA TagTamper chips integrated into specialized tamper-evident seals, we can address both of these problems at the same time.

The first problem is tamper detection. The TagTamper version includes a conductive loop that is physically broken the moment the seal is cut or removed. Once this happens, the chip permanently changes its state, and there is no way to restore it to “unopened.” Anyone verifying the seal later immediately sees that it has been opened.

The second problem is identity. Every TAGBASE seal contains a uniquely configured NFC chip with its own cryptographic identity. Our verification process cannot be fooled by copying the data onto another chip or by creating a visually identical counterfeit. Even if someone replaces the physical seal, the counterfeit simply cannot authenticate as the original.

Together, these two capabilities answer the two questions that matter most:

  • Is this the original seal?
  • Has this seal ever been opened?

Both answers can be obtained in seconds using nothing more than an NFC-enabled smartphone.

Sometimes the most important question isn’t “Can someone open this container?”

It’s “Can anyone prove that they did?”
