All He Wanted was a Birthday Cake

In October 1942, William was turning ten years old. For the occasion, he dreamed of his Mom’s Chocolate Angel Food cake. With all the food rations, dairy products were limited, so his hopes were low, and it caused much anxiety.

His mom was able to get the ingredients to make a Wartime Wacky Cake. His mother heard about this cake during the Depression; it required no eggs, butter, or milk.

His grandmother offered her monthly ration of sugar to make the cake and 3 tbsp of butter for the icing.

William said it was delicious and became his favorite cake.

Here is the recipe if you are interested in making this cake. My mother made it for us in the 1940s and '50s. It was moist and delicious.
