2.1 Introduction

Picture this: You go ahead, approach a common man- “Dada, which career is the best?”- An Indian blindfolded will answer: “Doctor ya Engineer.” I can guarantee you, these answers are passive engraved at the back of the mind. Ever wondered why this is? Or just simply replace: “ A lawyer” instead of the two most known careers, still wouldn’t make a difference in the competition present between these two careers. But why?

Let’s uncover : The futile reality of the Indian Government, Education System and Society.

2.2 Academic Journey and Parental Expectations

The academic system in India often focuses more on marks than genuine learning, creating unhealthy competition. Students who struggle are often pushed into remedial measures like subject exemptions and counseling on scoring better, rather than improving their understanding.

Coaching centers, meant to enhance learning, sometimes become places where students go to escape, feeling pressured rather than supported. Schools and coaching centers now collaborate, offering integrated classes, but often teach advanced concepts without addressing individual student needs.

Many parents, influenced by this system, push their children into competitive exams from as early as 6th grade, when students are just 10 or 11 years old. This early pressure leads to high expectations, and when children don’t meet these, they are often seen as failures. The system tends to prioritize rote learning over creativity and problem-solving, contributing to rising student stress and suicides.

2.3 Limited Opportunities and Delayed Mental Health

Honestly, why do you think students suicide? Is it because of the pressure, it’s not the pressure but the aftermath of just having no social interaction. You know, the saying : Where there’s a will, there is a way. But, what if the path of hope is blocked? Exactly, what it is.

In fact, for females due to the gender discrimination present, they don’t get their opportunity to seek refuge in friends or even a male. Now, Limited opportunities are present, mostly due to the closed mindsets of people and discouragement in a new way of learning, whereas promoting rat race. Now, what’s this rat race?

2.4 Trapped in the Rat Race

The term “rat race” refers to the relentless cycle in which students are pressured to chase marks in a system that values grades over genuine learning, while parents seek societal validation through their children’s academic achievements, and schools focus on improving their performance metrics rather than fostering meaningful education.

This creates a suffocating environment where the true purpose of education is lost, and the opportunities for personal growth, creativity, and intellectual curiosity are closed off.

In this race, Indian students are often denied the chance to explore their full potential beyond the narrow confines of a marks-oriented system. Hence, losing interest in actual learning whereas promoting rote memorization, passive learning leading to no interest in students.

In fact, parents keep up expectations of placement, but the reality is different, An Engineering college, offering only one student a package of 5LPA. So, do you think it’s worth the hustle?

The Indian education system’s focus on marks and societal expectations has created a stressful race that limits students’ growth and curiosity. To change this, we need to promote healthy competition that values real understanding, creativity, and individual strengths, instead of just exam scores.

Parents, schools, and society must shift away from rote learning and support students in developing critical thinking and problem-solving skills. By fostering an environment where students can explore their passions and learn collaboratively, we can help them succeed both academically and personally.
