We Couldn’t Find Safe Clothes for Our Babies. So We Made Them Ourselves.
A rash on a newborn’s skin. Three sleepless parents. And a quiet promise that changed everything — this is the story of how Zizuka was born.
There is a particular kind of love that hits you the moment you become a parent. It isn’t gentle or gradual. It arrives like a wave — sudden, enormous, a little terrifying, and from that moment on, every decision you make is filtered through one question: Is this safe for my baby?
We know that feeling. All three of us do. Because in 2022, we were all in the thick of it — new parents, new to the fog of sleepless nights, new to the way a baby’s cry rewires your entire nervous system. And like every new parent in India, we went looking for something that should have been simple to find: baby clothes that were soft, safe, chemical-free, and affordable.
We searched. We compared. We spent weekends visiting stores and evenings scrolling through pages online. We squeezed fabrics between our fingers and checked labels and debated thread counts.
What we found was a market that had forgotten who it was supposed to serve.
The night everything changed
It wasn’t a boardroom conversation that started Zizuka. It wasn’t a business plan or a market gap analysis. It was something much smaller, and much harder to forget.
One evening, one of our co-founders noticed something on his newborn daughter’s skin. Small red patches. Irritation around the creases where her clothing touched her most. The kind of rash that makes a parent’s heart drop.
They changed her clothing. Tried a different wash. Checked every product they’d used that day. And slowly, painfully, the answer became clear: the clothes themselves — the ones they had carefully chosen, the ones sold as “baby-safe” and “soft” and “gentle” — were the problem. Synthetic blends. Chemical dyes. Finishes designed for shelf appeal, not for the skin of a child who had been in this world for only a few weeks.
There is something uniquely devastating about realizing that the thing you chose to protect your baby — the thing you dressed them in with so much care — is the thing that hurt them. You cannot unfeel that. You carry it with you. And you start asking questions you cannot stop asking.
That night became a turning point. Not just for one family, but for three.
When our co-founder told us what had happened, none of us treated it as a story. We treated it as a warning. And then, quietly and without fanfare, we treated it as a mission.
The gap that shouldn’t have existed
India is one of the largest producers of cotton in the world. Our grandmothers wrapped babies in soft muslin cloth — breathable, natural, kind to skin that had never touched the world before. Muslin has been a part of Indian baby care for centuries. It isn’t a luxury. It’s a tradition.
And yet, when we went looking for quality muslin baby clothing in 2022, we found one of two things: either overpriced imported products that most Indian families simply cannot afford, or cheap domestically-made options that compromised on the very thing that mattered most — the fabric.
Affordable meant chemical-laden. Premium meant unaffordable. And in the middle, where millions of ordinary Indian families live — there was nothing. No brand that said, we see you, we know what you need, and we made this for your baby.
“Every parent deserves to dress their newborn in something genuinely safe — not just something that says it’s safe on the label.”
That absence felt wrong. It felt like a problem that had been waiting for someone to care enough to solve it. Three new parents, sitting with the memory of a rash that should never have happened — we decided to be those people.
Building something we would give our own children
We started in Trivandrum, from the city we call home, with no manufacturing experience and no roadmap. What we had was something more useful: the instincts of parents who knew exactly what they were looking for, because they had spent months failing to find it.
We didn’t approach product development like entrepreneurs. We approached it like parents. We asked: would I put this on my baby? Not my customer’s baby. Mine.
Every fabric sample that came through our hands was tested the way parents test things — held against skin, washed repeatedly, checked for softness, checked for shrinkage, checked for dyes that bleed. Every stitch, every seam placement, every print was considered not just for how it looked, but for how it felt against the cheek of a sleeping newborn.
The rash our co-founder’s daughter developed became our quality benchmark. Not in a cold, clinical way, in a deeply personal one. Every time a new product reached the final stage of approval, someone in our team would ask the question out loud: Would you put this on her?
If the answer was anything less than an immediate, certain yes — it went back.
What muslin means to us
We chose muslin not because it was trending, but because it was right. Muslin breathes. It softens with every wash. It regulates temperature in India’s brutal summers and stays gentle through winter nights. It doesn’t trap heat against a baby’s body. It doesn’t hold dye the way synthetic fabrics do. It has been wrapped around Indian babies for generations, and there is a reason for that.
When we brought muslin back — properly sourced, carefully processed, free from harsh chemicals and synthetic dyes — we weren’t reinventing something. We were restoring it. We were taking what our grandmothers already knew.
That is the family we built Zizuka for. Not the customer with an unlimited budget. The ordinary parent, doing extraordinary things every day, who deserves the same quality as anyone else.

The name that feels like a whisper
People often ask us what Zizuka means. The answer is both simple and deliberate: it exactly what it sounds like when you say it slowly.
Zi. Zu. Ka.
Soft. Light. Warm. A name that doesn’t belong to any single language, because we didn’t want it to. A name that any parent, in any corner of India, could say to their baby without it feeling foreign. A name that felt like a lullaby syllable — the kind of sound you make when you’re leaning over a crib at midnight, just watching them breathe.
We wanted the brand to feel the way our products feel: gentle, honest, and made with love.
What four years have taught us
Since 2022, Zizuka has reached thousands of families across India. Our muslin jablas travel to homes in Kerala, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and beyond. Our swaddles have wrapped babies on their very first night home from the hospital. Our hospital kits have been gifted at baby showers and tucked into overnight bags by mothers preparing for delivery.
None of that was part of a business plan. It happened because parents found something they were looking for and told other parents about it. That word-of-mouth is the thing we are most proud of, because it means we kept our promise.
We are still the same three friends who started this. We still debate fabric samples. We still argue about whether a new print is soft enough in feel and feel enough in softness. We still think about that baby’s skin rash — not as a cautionary tale, but as a compass. It keeps us pointed in the right direction when everything else gets complicated.
Building a brand is hard. Building a brand you believe in is harder, because the stakes feel personal every single day. But we wouldn’t trade it. Because on the days when a parent sends us a message — my baby slept through the night in your jabla, or the rash is gone since we switched to your muslin — on those days, the whole thing makes complete sense.
“We didn’t start a company. We made a promise to every parent who was standing where we once stood — searching, worried, wanting something better for their baby.”
That promise is still the first thing we think about every morning.
To the parent reading this
If you found us because you were searching for something safer, something softer, something you could trust — we want you to know that we understand. We were you. We know what it is to stand in a store holding a tiny garment and wonder, genuinely wonder, whether this is good enough for the person who matters most.
We made Zizuka so that wondering could stop.
Every stitch in every product we make carries a quiet intention: that the baby wearing it should feel nothing but comfort, and the parent dressing them should feel nothing but peace of mind.
That’s the whole story. It started with a rash on a newborn’s skin. And it continues every morning, in homes across India, when a parent picks up a soft piece of muslin and wraps their baby in it without a second thought.
Every little footprint deserves the softest start. — The Zizuka founders
