Yesterday, while talking to a friend, I was wearing a floral top when she suddenly said, “Your top looks like those moving patterns!” and it instantly reminded me of the old Classmate notebooks with grid and spiral designs on the back.

Have you ever stared at a page filled with small dots or circular designs and felt like they started moving as if the image itself came alive? That’s not magic it’s an optical illusion called a “motion illusion” or “peripheral drift illusion.”😵‍💫

🌀 What It’s Called

The exact name for this phenomenon is the Peripheral Drift Illusion (PDI). It makes static images appear to move, usually in a circular or wavy motion.

🧠 How It Works

Our eyes and brain don’t process all parts of an image at the same time. When patterns have: Contrasting colors like black, white, and gray. Repeating circular or spiral designs, and Small brightness differences, the brain misreads these signals especially in our peripheral vision, the side area we see without focusing directly. This mismatch tricks your brain into thinking the dots are moving. So even though the paper is still, your brain creates motion!

👨‍🔬 Who Discovered It

The illusion was first described by a Japanese psychologist Akiyoshi Kitaoka in the early 2000s. He created famous designs like Rotating Snakes and Peripheral Drift Illusion, which became world-famous optical illusions.

If you blink fast or move your eyes quickly while looking at it the “motion” increases. But if you stare straight at one point, it stops. That’s how you can test it!

And have you seen small black dots at the intersections, but when you try to focus on one, it disappears and new ones appear elsewhere. So it feels like the dots are blinking or moving, even though the image is completely still. It’s known as the Scintillating Grid Illusion a variation of the Hermann Grid Illusion.

🧩 Why it happens

Your eyes’ retina and visual cortex process brightness and contrast differently in the center vs. edges of your vision. At the intersections, your brain tries to adjust brightness, but it overcompensates creating “fake” gray or black dots that seem to flash. It’s again your peripheral vision playing tricks on you!

👨‍🔬 Who discovered it

The original Hermann Grid Illusion was discovered by Ludimar Hermann in 1870.👨‍🦱 The “scintillating” version with the blinking black dots came later, developed by vision scientists studying how contrast affects motion perception.

Sometimes the most ordinary things, like a Classmate book pattern, hide the most fascinating science.😇🌠
