So — what is Manus AI, exactly? Strip away the hype and here’s what you’re looking at: an AI agent that doesn’t just respond to prompts. It takes a goal, breaks it into steps, picks the right tools for each step, and executes them without you hovering over it.

Manus was originally built by Butterfly Effect, a startup that later relocated from Beijing to Singapore. Meta acquired it in late 2025 for over $2 billion — though that deal has since gotten complicated (China’s NDRC ordered the acquisition unwound in April 2026 on national security grounds). As of May 2026, the product itself is still running and accessible.

Under the hood, Manus operates inside a sandboxed cloud environment — its own virtual computer with a browser, a terminal, and a file system. It can open web pages, write and run code, create files, and compile everything into deliverables. You tell it what you want done; it figures out how.

That distinction matters. A chatbot gives you text. Manus gives you output.

How Manus Differs from a Chatbot

Here’s how I think about this.

When I use Claude or ChatGPT, I’m in a conversation. I prompt, I refine, I copy-paste the result somewhere else. The AI is a thinking partner — but I’m still the one doing the work of assembling the final product.

Manus tries to be the one assembling. You describe an end state — “research the top competitors in this space and put the findings in a spreadsheet” — and the agent plans a sequence of actions. It searches the web, opens pages, extracts data, writes code to structure it, and hands you a file.

The key difference is execution, not intelligence. Manus isn’t necessarily smarter than Claude or GPT-5. It’s that the system is designed to act on things, not just talk about them. It uses a multi-agent architecture where different specialized agents handle different parts of a task — one browses, one codes, one synthesizes.

I watched it run a research task through the live dashboard. You can see which pages it opens, what it searches for, what snippets it grabs. I kept expecting to need to step in, but for that particular task — a competitor pricing comparison — it ran the whole thing and delivered a clean document. I checked the sources. They were real.

Oh, this is kind of cool.

That said — it doesn’t always go this smoothly. More on that below.

What Manus AI Can Actually Do

The Manus AI features that matter most fall into a few buckets.

Wide Research. This is where I’ve seen it perform best. You give it a research question — “analyze the SaaS onboarding tools market, compare pricing for the top five” — and it runs parallel searches across multiple sources, synthesizes findings, and compiles a structured report. The Lindy.ai review of Manus describes this as its strongest use case, and from what I’ve seen, that tracks.

AI Slides, Sheets, and Docs. Manus can generate presentations, spreadsheets, and documents directly from a prompt. The slides aren’t going to win design awards, but as first drafts for internal decks or quick data summaries, they get the job done.

Code Execution. It can write and run Python inside its sandbox. Useful for data processing, scraping, formatting — the kind of scripting work that takes me an hour to set up manually. I haven’t tested this beyond basic data tasks, so I can’t speak to complex engineering use cases.

Scheduled Tasks and Background Operation. Unlike a chatbot that only works while you’re looking at it, Manus can run tasks in the background. You can set recurring jobs — daily research pulls, weekly reports — and it’ll execute them on schedule. That background capability is a genuine differentiator.

Mail Manus and Integrations. It connects to Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Drive, Slack, and other tools. You can turn incoming emails into actions or have it draft replies based on rules you define.

One thing I want to flag: the credit system means some features cost significantly more than others. A quick chat question might use 5–10 credits. A complex research workflow can burn 900+ credits in a single run. That gap isn’t obvious until you’ve used it a while.

Manus Browser Operator and Background Delegation

This is the feature I find most interesting — and the one worth paying attention to if you work with authenticated tools.

The Manus Browser Operator is a Chrome/Edge extension that lets Manus work inside your actual local browser. Not the cloud sandbox. Your browser, with your logins, your cookies, your IP address.

Why does that matter? Because most AI agents that try to browse the web hit a wall the moment they encounter a login screen, a CAPTCHA, or a bot-detection system. Cloud-based agents operate from data center IPs, and premium platforms (CRMs, financial data tools, analytics dashboards) block them immediately.

The Browser Operator sidesteps that. Since it’s running inside your trusted local session, the site sees your normal browser traffic. No CAPTCHA. No session expiration. Manus can navigate Ahrefs, Semrush, your CRM — whatever you’re logged into — and automate workflows inside those tools.

Wait… that’s interesting.

The setup is simple: enable the “My Browser” connector in Manus, install the extension, authorize each session. You can watch everything the agent does in a dedicated tab, and you can take over or stop it at any point. The official browser operator blog post walks through the three-step process.

I should note this is still in beta, and complex interactions like drag-and-drop or multi-step forms don’t always work perfectly. But the core idea — letting an AI agent operate inside your paid tools using your real sessions — is a meaningful step beyond what most competitors offer.

Who Should Use It and Who Should Wait

Let me give you an actual answer.

Manus makes sense if: your work involves repeated research-to-deliverable cycles (market research, competitor analysis, report compilation), you currently spend hours on tasks that follow a predictable pattern, and you’re comfortable with a credit-based system where costs scale with complexity.

Manus doesn’t make sense if: your primary AI need is conversational (brainstorming, writing assistance, Q&A), you need deep customization or integration with many third-party tools, or you’re not ready to manage a credit budget that can be hard to predict.

On Manus AI pricing — as of May 2026, the structure runs: Free (300 daily credits, good for testing), Pro at $20/month (4,000 credits), Pro at $40/month (8,000 credits), and an Extended tier at $200/month (40,000 credits). There’s also a Team plan starting at $20/seat. The credit system is the catch — a single deep-research task can eat 900–1,000 credits, so your monthly allocation goes faster than you’d expect. I’d recommend starting on the free tier to see how many credits your actual workflows consume before committing.

I’m still figuring out where this fits in my own setup. The research workflows are genuinely good. The Browser Operator is promising but not polished. And the ownership situation — Meta acquisition, China blocking the deal — adds uncertainty worth watching.

I could be wrong about some of this. I’ve spent about two weeks testing it, and there are corners I haven’t explored. But if your work involves turning messy web research into structured output, Manus is doing something different enough to be worth trying.
