ZUKU — Wananchi group

The ISP

Last year, around this time(2022, Nov-Dec) zuku customers really fell infringed by the poor internet service and the downtime all through major cities. It was so bad that zuku customer care personnel even stopped receiving calls of internet issue complaints. Reason for this? I don’t know, maybe they were told to ignore them, maybe they didn’t know what the issue was, or maybe worse, they knew what the issue was and for some reason were unable to disclose to their customers.

I happened to be one of the customers. LOL. However though, if you called them with an inquiry to pay or to subscribe, they did receive your call. LOL. Anyway, the purpose of this publication is not to shade our beloved ISP in bad light. But let’s just say, that was the last time I subscribed to their services… Well, until recently.

I was shocked at the huge improvements they made. Was this because I subscribed to their services from a different area? I highly doubt that because it’s not Nairobi and the time I had issues, I was in the capital city. New routers, Use of fiber cables, mehn, let me not even get into their web management interface. You can’t just change the password without knowing the old password, this makes things like Cross Site Request Forgery that may lead to an attacker changing your web management interface password. I didn’t want to get so technical with this but clearly, there’s a lot of improvement in the security awareness there now. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not saying that they are completely secure, nothing ever really is, but there’s surely something that happened to bring the complete turn-around.

Was the incident that happened end last year play a role in this? That’s the million shilling question. Ain’t we as customers entitled to information? Ain’t there regulatory bodies ensuring that customers are kept in the loop? Do they actually exist or are they just shells. If they do exist, are they doing there jobs? That’s a debate that should surely be had. Anyway, a brief scratch on the surface in an attempt to unearth if the allegations I heard from an inside technical team member was true yielded no fruit.

I’m however impressed with the changes and steps Wananchi are making to make the cyberspace a better place and a better experience. Thank y’all for taking your time to read this publication and for that, I’ll leave you with a quote from one of my favorite TV characters. Everyday we change the world… but to change the world in a way that means anything, it takes more time than most people have. I hope Wananchi have more time than most people. Have a good one!
