How Many Airports Are in the USA? The 19,919-Airport System Explained

The United States has 19,919 registered airports, according to FAA data. That number is often misunderstood because many people assume “airport” means a commercial airport with airline gates and TSA screening. In reality, the total includes commercial airports, general aviation fields, private-use sites, military facilities, and more.
Only 522 airports in the US have scheduled commercial airline service. Of those, just 30 are classified as large hubs, and those 30 airports handle more than 70% of all commercial airline passengers. That level of concentration is one of the defining features of American aviation.
The busiest airport in the country is Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta, which has led the world in passenger traffic since 1998. Denver International is the largest US airport by land area, covering 53 square miles, which is larger than Manhattan. Alaska is another major outlier, with more than 250 public airports and many communities reachable only by air.
