Books Like Ice Planet Barbarians

Let me paint a picture for you to see if this feels at all familiar — you hear all the buzz about some book about aliens with a weird title. You dither about it because the cover with the blue alien guys looks a little cheeseball. Then you find it for free on your library and decide to give it a go — and it’s actually AMAZING. Funny, fun, surprisingly romantic, and totally bonkers. Then you know you want more.

Just me? Guessing by the incredible sales of the book, it’s definitely not just me. If you’re craving other books like this incredible series, read on for some recommendations.

We’ll start in the most obvious place — have you read any other books by Ruby Dixon? She is PROLIFIC and has written everything from dragon shifters to sea ogres to old gods to alien clones. Here, in no particular order, are a few of my favorites -

Okay, I might have lied, because I think this is my all-time favorite series I’ve read of hers. Both books feature a cloned, scary alien warrior who seems to be out of control and is imprisoned to keep others safe, and the human woman who connects with him and helps him see the better side of himself. Highly, highly recommend. I really hope she continues this series at some point!

2. **The King’s Spinster Bride**

This one reads almost more fantasy than sci-fi romance, with a princess whose kingdom has been conquered by a rival kingdom of “savages.” The princess and the new king/warrior have a history, though — she saved him when he was a boy, and he’s dreamed of marrying her ever since. It’s a super romantic, swoony story, and very short if you need a quick fix!

3. **Prison Planet Barbarian**

I would have never guessed that prison planets are my thing, but apparently, they’re my thing. Chloe is a human who’s been wrongfully imprisoned and sent to a fierce prison planet full of hostile aliens. Jutari is a big blue alien who falls in love with her at first sight and vows to protect her. This book had me in such a chokehold, and is also a very quick read — with a long series of spinoff books that follows afterward!

4. **Bull Moon Rising**

This is, I believe, the first trad published series Ruby Dixon has written (at least, under that pen name) and the world and characters are much more developed, with a slower pace than some of those other quick, spicy reads. Let there be no confusion, though — there is still plenty of steamy stuff in this book about a brainy scholar and the minotaur who can’t resist her. Try out this one for a slower-paced read.

5. Captive of the Horde King by Zoey Draven

If you watched Game of Thrones and really dug Khal Drogo and the Dothraki, but kinda wished they were aliens, this is the series for you. These books are compulsively readable and the heroines have some nice variety and shape to them, too.

6. **Merry and Bright by J.J. Hynd**

Listen, in this household, it’s Christmas year round, okay? If you’re looking for a quick, fun, and achingly cute alien rom-com, this is the one for you. Ali’s family is visiting her from Earth for Christmas. The only problem is, they want to meet the amazing boyfriend she’s been telling them about — and he doesn’t exist. Enter hunky alien Varios, who has some…interesting alien anatomy.

7. **Alien Tyrant by Ursa Dax**

This one is probably closest to Ice Planet Barbarians, even though it definitely has its own background and cultural specifications for the aliens. It’s also the first in a long series of standalones that have through lines that will pay off over several books. If you’re looking for your next 16-book binge, this is a great choice!

8. **Exiles on Earth by Bea Tama**

Hang on, I just had to add this one to my TBR because it sounds AMAZING! Exiled clone-alien Ilia crash lands on Ellen’s farm, ruining her plans to turn it into a B&B. Ilia wants to make up for the damage he caused and win Ellen’s heart, but first he’ll have to win her trust. The first in a series!

9. **Hold by Claire Kent**

Remember how I said apparently prison planets are my thing? Here’s another offering in that very niche subgenre from Claire Kent. Note, the characters are NOT aliens but human, but the story is still firmly set in a futuristic setting with some very steamy plotlines. As with all the books, please check the trigger warnings before engaging!

Do you love cinnamon-roll heroes, mate bonds, creative anatomy, space travel, alien planets, and cozy-ish vibes? Then Tempting Cargo is the book for you! Captain Shohari’s family expects WAY too much of her, and they’re going to force her into an arranged marriage if she doesn’t meet their outrageous demands. But when she takes on human passengers, she feels an unexpected — and very inconvenient! — draw to Garrison. First in a series!

Jade must choose an alien husband/protector to stay safe on her new planet. Theo is a scarred mercenary who has never been chosen. Their marriage of convenience (one of my favorite tropes!) soon turns into a lot more as they grow to trust and love each other. The first in one of the OG alien romance series!

Just in time for Valentine’s Day! This one is releasing this upcoming week and is part of an ongoing holiday-themed series (so far there’s Christmas and Halloween). Annabel’s solo-time Valentine’s Day plans are thwarted when she finds an injured alien behind a dumpster. A super hot injured alien who becomes her roommate. What could possibly go wrong? ;)

13. **Claiming His Mate by A.G. Wilde**

I have not read this one yet, but A.G. Wilde has been on my radar for a long time, and I chose one of the many books that looked as fun and funny and bonkers as IBP. In this one, the FMC is on some kind of intergalactic cruise that gets waylaid by alien pirates? Sounds interesting! I look forward to diving in.

As a HUGE fan of the Seven Brides for Seven Brothers movie, I knew I had to check out this series from Honey Phillips, that follows a similar plot as the classic musical, but set in space, with alien “brothers.” Amazing.
