DOS(Denial Of Service)& DDOS(Distributed Denial Of Service) SOLUTION…

Before moving into the topic let’s get some clear knowledge about what is DOS or DDOS.

So basically DOS stands for Denial Of Service which means that your requirement is more than the resource you have, so you are not able to fulfill all your requirements. Now let’s consider it as an attack, where a particular user or person tries to block all the resources so then no other users are able to use it. So now the users who are not able to use the resources they have to face the problem that is Denial Of Resources (DOS).

Same in DDOS which stands for Distributed Denial Of Service. In this what happens is more number of unauthenticated users get access to the resources which slow down your system and the authenticated users did not get their required resources. Deep definition is something very different but so I just tried to clear with a simple one.

Now let’s have some examples then you will understand how we can solve your problems with the help of AWS cloud and it’s different services.

Just by hearing the word cloud don’t be in a confusion for the matter of security, I am talking about the most trusted and renowned cloud service that is AWS (Amazon Web Service) which is known for its performance and security since 2006 and continuously increasing its customer database with its fabulous services.

Ex:-1 Suppose you are running a small infrastructure and you have a website and it is hosted on an on-premises server and someday due to some peak hour on your website the number of users to the website increases and your server do not have the capabilities to serve this many number of users then some users have to go through Denial Of Service problem. The number of users is more than the capability of your on-premises server can handle.

The above problem(Ex:-1) has been faced by many of the industries and even small businesses also and I think it’s a problem for you also, so you are here. This cause a huge impact on users or customers experience. So now let’s see how we can help you out and provide your customers and users with a good experience.

AUTO-SCALING

First, we can use the ongoing superb service of AWS that is Auto Scaling. What happens in this service is it monitors your applications and automatically adjusts the capacity of the resources to maintain the application stable. If your website or your application is running on cloud then we are here to configure it Auto-Scaling and then we will never be worried about your website or application during peak hours.

It helps you to have a huge resource amount when required like the peak hours and automatically scale-out when it is not in use. It does not remain forever and hamper your monthly billing structure. For the time it is required it is created and is used and then it is deleted. Now your users will not face the Denial of Service problem anymore. I told you before that it can also be an attack so how to stay protected from that I will be telling soon.

Auto-scaling is basically a solution for small businesses. Because here also you have to mention a limit that is up to what extent you can extend or increase your resources. For example, you are running one server in a general situation and in peak time you set the threshold to have a maximum of three servers, and suppose in the peak hours the number of users increases and now the three servers are also not able to handle the request then the Auto-Scaling will not create a fourth server. As the limit is marked by you is to have three only. It helps you to protect from unwanted billing but still the customer experience becomes worst.

AWS FARGATE

So what if you want unlimited resources? For that also we have a solution that is AWS Fargate. AWS Fargate is a serverless compute engine that allocates the right amount of computing resources required for your application or website.

Basically, AWS Fargate works on ECS(Amazon Elastic Container Service) and EKS(Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service). It provides you unlimited resources for your application as well as your websites. There is no such max limit or any kind of threshold. If the application or the hosted websites required some extra resources then it is the responsibility of AWS Fargate to give it to them. Just you have to deploy your application and manage it, not the infrastructure. You will have to pay as per the number of application launch and as per their respective use. With the help of ECS and EKS, all the applications are properly isolated and run on their dedicated kernel runtime environment and do not share CPU, memory, storage, or network resources with each other.

The isolation and total use of AWS Fargate is totally secure as it’s a part of the most trusted cloud service provider, AWS. Even if it also being used by National Australia Bank (NAB) and they are very happy with the performance and security compliance. It is also used by some leading companies like Samsung, Vanguard, FireEye and many more.

ATTACK PROTECTION

I previously talked about how DOS and DDOS are a type of attack. So same in AWS Fargate if someone tries to attack your application that is running on AWS Fargate that may be DOS or DDOS your users will not face any issue or any downtime because AWS Fargate will handle all the upcoming requests and will add more resources as much as required to fulfill the demand. But the problem is that you will be unnecessarily charged for the resources that are not being used by any of your users or customers. These resources are generated due to the attacker bulk request on the application.

But still, you have to pay for it. Here comes Amazon GardDuty to the picture. Amazon GuardDuty is a threat detection service that continuously monitors for malicious activity and unauthorized behavior to protect your AWS accounts and workloads. With GuardDuty, you now have an intelligent and cost-effective option for continuous threat detection in the AWS Cloud. It is a service that Strengthens security through automation. With a few configurations on the AWS Management console, we can enable Amazon GuardDuty and you can protect yourself from any kind of attack and you can identify it also. If we integrate AWS GuardDuty with AWS CloudWatch Events, then all the GuardDuty alerts or actions will be notified to you.

The service uses machine learning and integrated threat intelligence to identify and prioritize threats. AWS GuardDuty analyzes AWS data sources, such as AWS CloudTrail, Amazon VPC Flow Logs, and DNS logs. And helps you to protect your applications and even from the unwanted billing issues.

Scale your application resources when required and scale-out when not, with the help of automation and no human interaction. If you have any more problems then feel free to contact us. We have a solution for your each and every problem, we will always be there to support you.
