Canada’s Own “Cobes” Returns With His Instinct-Driven New Single “Older”

Canada’s underground music scene continues to thrive on authenticity, and rising Canadian artist Cobes is embracing that energy with the release of his latest single, “Older.” The new track marks a fresh chapter for the artist, showcasing a raw, freestyle-driven creative approach that highlights instinct, emotion, and organic expression over overly polished production.

With “Older,” Cobes leans into a process that prioritizes feeling in the moment. Rather than overthinking melodies or lyrics, the artist approaches each session with a mindset centered around spontaneity and instinct.

“I constantly like to try new approaches when recording music,” Cobes explains. “With my newer music including ‘Older,’ I just go off feeling. When I hear the beat I don’t hesitate for a second — I load up the track, my setup is ready in my bedroom, and I just freestyle.”

That method has become a defining element of Cobes’ sound. Much of what listeners hear on “Older” comes directly from those first moments in the booth. Instead of endlessly reworking verses, the Toronto artist intentionally keeps many of his original takes to maintain the natural emotion behind the track.

“A lot of what ends up staying in the song is the first take,” he says. “I don’t want to overdo it or force it. I want the music to feel organic and raw.”

That raw energy is something Cobes plans to carry throughout the rest of the year. According to the artist, the music he’s currently working on follows the same instinct-based creative philosophy.

“All this new music I’ve been working on and plan on releasing this year is going off of feeling,” he says. “It’s about what first hits my brain and what I find hits. And everything I got dropping this year hits.”

The sonic foundation for “Older” came from producer Taurs, whose beat helped inspire the freestyle energy that drives the track. While Cobes didn’t enter the studio with a specific concept or theme in mind, a few influential names did cross his mind while recording.

“With going into the song free-minded and freestyling on this crazy beat thanks to my producer friend Taurs, I wouldn’t say I had too much inspiration,” he explains. “But some names that came to mind while making the song were Playboi Carti and Sofaygo.”

Those influences subtly shape the record’s atmospheric delivery and modern melodic approach, placing Cobes comfortably within the evolving landscape of underground hip-hop.

Beyond the music itself, “Older” also reflects the personal growth Cobes has experienced throughout his career. Like many independent artists building their own path, his journey has come with both progress and setbacks.

“My career has had a lot of ups and downs,” Cobes says. “I’ve been doing music, live shows, and a lot more for a long time.”

In recent years, the artist continued developing his craft while studying the business side of the industry as well.

“Last year I got a diploma studying Music Industry Arts,” he explains. “But during that time I wasn’t dropping a lot of music or staying consistent.”

Recognizing that gap helped fuel a renewed sense of focus. Cobes has since shifted his attention toward building momentum again through consistent releases and stronger engagement with his audience.

“With getting back into things I can admit my career has taken a pivot,” he says. “But I’ll always have my name out there. I’m still growing in the Toronto underground with my friends and making connections.”

That growth mindset is central to Cobes’ outlook moving forward. The artist believes that persistence and consistency will ultimately open new doors.

“With hard work and consistency, good things will happen,” he says. “I just have to keep working and focusing on my career. ‘Older’ is the first of many.”

Although Cobes has built a reputation for his energetic stage presence — something he says has been a part of his life for years — his current priority is building momentum online before stepping back onto the stage.

“I love shows and I love the crowd,” he shares. “I feel like I was made to be on stage since I’ve basically been doing it my whole life. But right now I’m focusing on releasing new music, content, and being consistent online before doing more shows.”

With a renewed drive and a wave of music on the way, Cobes is clearly entering a new phase of his career — one fueled by instinct, persistence, and a dedication to keeping his sound real.
