When the internet was weird

I Miss the Ugly Internet

In 2026, internet is perfect and that’s the problem

I miss when the internet felt slightly unhinged.

Comment sections weren’t curated extensions of someone’s personal brand. They were chaotic. Someone would overshare. Someone would type in all caps. Someone would start an argument about something completely unrelated to the original post and somehow win. There were typos everywhere. Half-finished thoughts. Emojis used with reckless confidence. People replying at 2:17 AM like the internet was a diary instead of a stage.

It was messy. And because it was messy, it felt alive.

I miss ugly blogs too. Bright pink headers. Fonts that should have been illegal. Sidebars crammed with glitter GIFs and confessional “About Me” pages that read like therapy notes. Nobody was building a funnel. Nobody was crafting a positioning statement. They were just typing. You could feel when someone was spiraling. You could feel when someone was in love. You could feel when someone was trying to figure something out in real time.

Nothing was optimized. Nothing was packaged. It was a person thinking out loud.

Back then, the internet wasn’t a showroom. It was a bedroom with the door slightly open.

You could always tell when something was written at 2 AM. It wandered. It contradicted itself. It didn’t have a hook or three tidy takeaways. It didn’t end with a question engineered for engagement. It felt like you had stumbled into someone’s brain before they had time to clean it.

Before they rearranged the furniture. Before they hid the laundry. Before they decided which version of themselves was “on brand.”

Now when I scroll, everything feels prepared.

Every sentence looks like it passed through quality control. The hooks are sharp. The spacing is intentional. The insights arrive in neat, numbered batches. Even vulnerability sounds rehearsed. It’s all very clear. Too perfect.

And somehow, completely indistinguishable.

We polished the rough edges. We fixed the grammar. We optimized the tone.

But somewhere in the cleanup, we erased the fingerprints.

I’m not against clarity. I’m not against better writing. I’m not even against AI. I just miss when the internet felt like a place where people were still becoming, not performing.

When did we decide that every thought had to be useful to deserve space?

And more importantly, are we brave enough to sound a little unfinished again?
