How to choose the ideal photographer and deal with fear when posing.
That’s why countless people, even those who desperately want to, never do a photoshoot.
Firstly, when we choose to do a photoshoot, we have to get to the root of the personal meaning that connects us to that shoot. After all, when we look for a photographer to record an important phase of our private lives, we seek an emotional connection with that moment.
What I believe is essential at this moment is to connect, openly and comprehensively, with our motives and feelings. Whether it’s recording and celebrating your child’s first birthday, or even doing a photoshoot to boost self-esteem. Seeking this root means shedding automatic formalities and asking yourself: Why does this matter to me?
Secondly, we need to look for a professional who matches our personal tastes. For example, if you are a romantic, reserved person who only wants to immortalize something that is already eternal in your heart, the documentary and fine art style are perfect. In this search, you will realize that there are countless types of photographers and styles. And knowing how to choose a style that matches your personality is one of the main points here. So make this search something positive and stimulating.
Allow yourself to share all your doubts with the photographers you get quotes from.
Don’t be afraid to ask how a photoshoot happens if you’ve never done one or how they work. And also don’t forget that there are countless types of photographers out there, with the most diverse work styles and even character; being the client who asks numerous questions and honest questions allows you to assess whether that is the right professional to photograph you. In any case, it is always, always, always worth researching the professional you will be doing your photoshoot with. Only in this case will you have a lower chance of being frustrated by the professional’s perception of you and by possible misunderstandings during the process.
I believe that vulnerability is what connects us most as human beings, and this same connection is what unties the knot of this invisible thread of energy, to the point of transcending into images that you will love for a lifetime! So, for me, the ideal photographer is one who connects with your story and vision. Make this choice consciously.
Don’t think it will be easy for the photographer either; therefore, always seek transparency between both parties. Behind the camera is a vulnerable human being who is also getting to know you for the first time, trying to decipher who you are and do a good job.
Once everything is set and you’ve already set the date, recapture that exciting feeling from the beginning, get excited about the idea. Dream about the outfits, the makeup, the special people happy and being part of this beautiful moment of silence and introspection that a photoshoot brings. And obviously, share all of this with your photographer! rs
On the day of the shoot, talk to them about your passions in life and find things you have in common that make you see that person with a camera in their hand as someone familiar. The more familiar we make the environment and the person photographing us, the more relaxed we become.
Breathing exercises before and during the shoot are also great for relaxing facial muscles and relieving anxiety tension. As anxiety decreases, insecurity fades along with it.
Having said all that, my main advice is to never forget who you are and what you like on this journey until you’re in front of a photographer’s camera. To deal with fear and insecurities when posing for a photoshoot, it’s essential to first know who we are and what we want. Only then will we be able to communicate our true essence and feel good in our own clothes.
