The Resume Mistake That Makes Good Candidates Look Average.

Many good candidates do not have bad resumes.

They have average resumes.

That is almost worse, because an average resume does not obviously fail. It looks tidy. It lists jobs. It mentions skills. It includes responsibilities. It feels complete.

But it does not create urgency.

It does not make a recruiter think, “I need to speak to this person.”

The biggest reason is simple: the resume describes work, but does not prove value.

A weak bullet says, “Responsible for customer service.”

A stronger bullet says, “Handled 40+ customer enquiries per shift while maintaining accurate records across booking and payment systems.”

Both describe the same kind of work. Only one gives the recruiter something to trust.

That is the difference between duty and evidence.

Recruiters already know what most roles involve. They know what an admin assistant does. They know what a retail worker does. They know what a project coordinator, receptionist, support worker, or marketing assistant usually does.

What they do not know is how well you did it.

Your resume needs to answer that.

Did you handle high volume? Improve a process? Reduce errors? Save time? Support a team? Train someone? Manage pressure? Hit a target? Solve a recurring problem?

Those details turn ordinary experience into interview-worthy evidence.

Formatting matters too. A resume can have strong content but still fail if it is hard to scan. Clear headings, simple structure, short bullets, and clean formatting help both recruiters and hiring systems understand your experience faster.

Do not hide important information inside long paragraphs. Do not use design features that make the document harder to read. Do not make the recruiter work to find the match.

The best resumes feel easy.

They show the right information in the right order.

Another mistake is sending the same resume everywhere. You do not need to rewrite your whole resume for each application, but you do need to adjust the focus. If the job ad keeps mentioning reporting, stakeholder communication, and scheduling, those points should be visible early.

A resume is not a storage folder for everything you have ever done.

It is a targeted argument for one opportunity.

That is why strong candidates sometimes get ignored. Their experience is real, but their resume does not prove it quickly enough.

The fix is not to sound more impressive.

The fix is to become more specific.

Specific examples. Specific numbers. Specific tools. Specific outcomes.

That is what moves a resume from average to useful.
