The Illusion of Flow — Why the Universe Might Be Stuttering

We move through the world assuming it flows. It feels seamless, like a river that never breaks, a light that never flickers. We trust this continuity because our survival depends on it. A predator doesn’t stutter; a falling rock doesn’t buffer. Our brains evolved to stitch the world into a smooth, navigable whole.

But what if that smoothness is a post-production effect?

Think of a strobe light in a dark room chopping a smooth movement into jagged, frozen poses. Or a simple flip-book: a stack of static drawings that, when thumbed through quickly enough, tricks the eye into seeing fluid animation. In both cases, the continuity is an illusion. The reality is a sequence of stops.

In Chapter Two of my book, The Secret To All Secrets: The Shape Beneath the Shape, I explore the unsettling possibility that the universe itself operates on a similar mechanism.

Physics has long known about the Planck time — a unit so small it is often treated as a mathematical curiosity. But if we view it not as a unit, but as a limit, the picture shifts. It suggests that reality has a “shutter speed” or a maximum tempo at which the present moment can be written.

If the present doesn’t flow, but arrives in discrete, frozen packets, where do those packets come from? And what is holding them together?

This chapter invites you to look past the stitching of your own perception and ask: If the universe is a series of frames, what is happening in the gaps?
