Conceptual Background

The discussion originates from the contrast between classical matter-first models — which assume a closed, self-contained biological body — and the open-system perspective, which emphasizes environmental coupling and feedback. The closed-system view treats the organism as self-sufficient, capable of internal self-regulation through purely mechanical or information-theoretic means. However, long-term human persistence and evolution reveal limits to such closure: no finite internal mechanism can guarantee stability across millions of generations without external feedback.

Hence, both information theory and modern biology implicitly presuppose the existence of an external reference: a source of feedback, constraint, and calibration beyond the system itself.

Information-Theoretic Logic

From a logical standpoint, information is defined only in relation to a difference that can be recognized. While this definition follows the conventional information-theoretic sense — information as a recognizable difference — it should be treated merely as a subset of a broader ontological principle in the DLR framework. Recognition implies comparison; comparison implies reference to something external to the current state. Therefore:

  • A self-contained informational system cannot measure or correct its own errors without an external standard or relational difference.
  • Even within a closed universe, informational coherence presupposes internal relational openness — subsystems that function as external references to each other.
  • Thus, the dependence on external reference is logically necessary for any system that transmits, stores, or corrects information.

In philosophical terms, pure self-reference collapses into indeterminacy; difference and relation are conditions of intelligibility.

Biological Logic

Biological systems exemplify the same logical structure in material form. Life sustains itself through continuous exchange of matter, energy, and information with its environment. Empirically, phenomena such as genetic drift, ecological adaptation, and homeostatic regulation show that the organism’s persistence depends on environmental feedback. Thus:

  • The human biological body is an open system, operationally autonomous but structurally dependent.
  • Internal mechanisms (e.g., DNA repair, metabolic regulation) are probabilistic and cannot ensure perfect stability.
  • The environment functions as the external reference that calibrates and sustains the system’s coherence.

This coupling extends beyond the physical to the cognitive, social, and cultural levels, where language, cooperation, and shared meaning provide higher-order feedback loops.

Collective and Meta-Stable Contexts

Because internal correction mechanisms are statistically variable across individuals, population-level stability demands that the external reference be stable at the collective scale. Ecological constancy, social cooperation, and cultural norms together provide the meta-stable field that counteracts local fluctuations.

This leads to the principle of dynamic coherence:

  • The external reference must be stable enough to maintain collective order, yet flexible enough to allow adaptation and evolution.

A purely static reference ensures survival but prevents progress — the “cave condition.” A purely dynamic reference dissolves stability. Human continuity arises in the meta-stable middle ground.

Philosophical Synthesis

The convergence of information-theoretic and biological reasoning leads to a single philosophical insight:

  • No system can define, sustain, or evolve itself without some relation to what lies outside it.

Both information and life demonstrate that apparent self-sufficiency is always grounded in dependence. An informational system requires something outside its current state to measure difference and meaning; a biological organism requires an environment to exchange energy, matter, and feedback. In both cases, what appears as “self-correction” or “self-maintenance” is possible only because there exists a reference beyond the self that provides contrast, validation, or renewal.

This principle implies that autonomy and dependence are not opposites but complementary aspects of being. A system achieves stability precisely by remaining open to influence; it endures not by exclusion of the external, but by continuous dialogue with it. Where relation ceases, meaning collapses and life disintegrates.

Thus, external reference is the silent condition of possibility for both order and transformation. Information gains intelligibility through difference; life gains coherence through exchange. The same relational logic governs both domains, suggesting that openness is not a temporary strategy of survival but a structural feature of existence itself.

In this light, stability and evolution are not separate achievements but two expressions of one relational truth: that coherence, in all its forms, depends on participation in a world beyond the self.

The External Reference Paradox demonstrates that any system capable of evolution and self-correction must rely on an informational reference that persists beyond individual biological lifetimes. This logical necessity establishes the existence of the Informational Layer — a conserved structure through which continuity and coherence are sustained after the dissolution of transient physical embodiments. In this way, the paradox not only affirms the indispensability of external referencing for evolutionary coherence but also grounds the dual-layered framework itself in the logical architecture of persistence.

Implications for Philosophy of Mind and Humanity

The human being embodies this dual dependence:

  • Biologically open to the physical environment,
  • Cognitively open to meaning and culture.

Our stability as a species arises not from perfect self-regulation but from our embeddedness in relational systems — ecological, social, and symbolic. To exist, the human organism must remain in dialogue with its external references; to evolve, those references must themselves evolve.

Hence, the ultimate philosophical insight: Openness is not the negation of stability, but its very form. The human condition is one of sustained coherence through external reference — a harmony of dependence and autonomy, of stability and becoming.
