COVID-19 in India Live Updates: Small Number of Cases in Kerala, No Need to Be Concerned, Says CM Vijayan

Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala — May 30, 2025 — Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan today addressed the state’s COVID-19 situation, reassuring the public that despite a “small number” of active cases, there is no need for undue concern. This statement comes amidst reports of Kerala having the highest active caseload in the country, currently exceeding 700.

During a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, CM Vijayan confirmed that 727 active COVID-19 cases are present in Kerala. The majority of these cases are concentrated in districts such as Kottayam, Ernakulam, Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, and Alappuzha. He highlighted that the Omicron JN variant LF7, which has been identified in several South-East Asian countries, is among the variants detected in the state.

Despite the numbers, CM Vijayan emphasized that Kerala’s health infrastructure is fully equipped and prepared to manage the current situation. He stated that the Health Department is closely monitoring the increase in cases.

Given that it is currently the rainy season, the Chief Minister underscored the importance of vigilance against all infectious diseases, not just COVID-19. He particularly advised extreme caution against leptospirosis infection, which can be severe during this period.

• Mask Usage: Individuals experiencing symptoms such as cold, sore throat, cough, or shortness of breath are strongly advised to wear masks. Masks have also been made mandatory in hospitals, and health workers are required to wear them. The elderly, pregnant women, and those with serious illnesses are also recommended to wear masks in public places and while traveling.
• Leptospirosis Prevention: For those involved in relief operations or dealing with soil and sewage, taking doxycycline as per the instructions of health workers is advised to prevent leptospirosis infection.
• Water-borne Diseases: CM Vijayan also warned against the possibility of water-borne diseases and urged the consumption of only boiled water.

The Union Health Ministry data indicates that India has crossed 1,000 active COVID-19 cases, with Kerala contributing a significant portion of this tally, followed by Maharashtra. While there has been a recent uptick in cases across various states, particularly driven by sub-lineages of the Omicron variant like NB.1.8.1 and LF.7, health authorities generally note that symptoms remain mild for most infected individuals.
