🌄 La inguandia y el camino — Stubbornness and the Path

— (Carrasquilla) No había en la vereda quien no conociera a la señora Matilde, mujer de asiento firme y palabra atravesada, que cuando se le metía una idea en la cabeza, ni el cura ni el médico ni el mismo San Isidro lograban bajársela. Decían que no era maldad, sino una inguandia de esas que se le pegan al alma como garrapata en verano.

— (Carrasquilla / English) There was no one in the village who did not know Doña Matilde, a woman of firm bearing and stubborn speech. Once an idea lodged itself in her mind, neither priest nor doctor nor even Saint Isidore himself could remove it. They said it was not wickedness, but a kind of stubborn urge — an inguandia — that clings to the soul like a tick in summer.

— (Efe Gómez) Matilde sostenía que su cuerpo era fuerte. No aceptaba argumento contrario. Fumaba con regularidad y comía dulce en exceso. Ante advertencias, respondía con negación simple: “A mí no me pasa nada”.

— (Efe Gómez / English) Matilde maintained that her body was strong. She accepted no opposing argument. She smoked regularly and consumed sweets excessively. When warned, she replied with a simple denial: “Nothing will happen to me.”

— (Carrasquilla) Y vea pues que el cuerpo, que es sabio aunque uno no le crea, le empezó a hablar en voz bajita: un dolorcito en el pie, una punzada traicionera, una fatiga que no era de cansancio sino de aviso. Pero ella, con su inguandia bien puesta, se hacía la sorda, como quien oye llover y no se moja.

— (Carrasquilla / English) And so the body, wise even when ignored, began to speak in whispers: a small pain in the foot, a treacherous sting, a fatigue not born of effort but of warning. Yet she, wrapped in her stubborn inguandia, pretended not to hear — like one who listens to rain and refuses to get wet.

— (Efe Gómez) El dolor progresó. Se presentó limitación funcional. La paciente minimizó los síntomas. Postergó consulta. Cuando acudió, el diagnóstico fue claro: complicación asociada a diabetes y compromiso circulatorio.

— (Efe Gómez / English) The pain progressed. Functional limitation appeared. The patient minimized the symptoms and delayed consultation. When she finally sought help, the diagnosis was clear: complications related to diabetes and circulatory impairment.

— (Carrasquilla) Ahí sí, hermano, cuando el dolor no fue dolorcito sino grito, cuando el pie ya no era pie sino pena, fue que la vida le puso el freno en seco. Y no hubo rezo ni promesa que evitara lo que vino: le cortaron la pierna, así, de un tajo que no fue castigo sino campanada.

— (Carrasquilla / English) Then, my friend, when pain was no longer a whisper but a cry, when the foot was no longer a foot but sorrow, life pulled the brake without warning. No prayer or promise could stop what came: her leg was taken, in a stroke that was not punishment, but a bell tolling.

— (Efe Gómez) Amputación infrarrotuliana. Procedimiento necesario. Consecuencia directa de la negligencia sostenida.

— (Efe Gómez / English) Below-knee amputation. Necessary procedure. Direct consequence of sustained negligence.

— (Carrasquilla) Pero es que la vida, vea, no es solo machete: también es semilla. Y cuando Matilde estaba ahí, con su silencio nuevo y su cuerpo incompleto, llegó un amigo, de esos que no hablan mucho pero dicen lo justo, y le soltó la verdad como quien siembra: — Esto no es el final. Es el comienzo si usted quiere.

— (Carrasquilla / English) But life, you see, is not only a blade — it is also a seed. And when Matilde sat there, in her new silence and incomplete body, a friend arrived — one of those who speak little but say enough — and planted the truth like a seed: — This is not the end. It is the beginning, if you choose it to be.

— (Efe Gómez) La paciente reconsideró. Aceptó su condición. Inició proceso de adaptación.

— (Efe Gómez / English) The patient reconsidered. She accepted her condition and began the process of adaptation.

— (Carrasquilla) Y entonces, lo que antes fue inguandia se volvió otra cosa… ya no era terquedad ciega, sino constancia con rumbo. Se paró en una prótesis como quien aprende a caminar por segunda vez, pero ahora mirando el suelo y el cielo al mismo tiempo.

— (Carrasquilla / English) And so, what once was stubborn inguandia became something else… no longer blind obstinacy, but directed persistence. She stood on a prosthesis like one learning to walk again — yet this time, looking both at the ground and the sky.

— (Efe Gómez) Rehabilitación exitosa. Cambio de hábitos. Actividad física regular. Mejora sostenida.

— (Efe Gómez / English) Successful rehabilitation. Change of habits. Regular physical activity. Sustained improvement.

— (Carrasquilla) Y la gente, que antes se reía de su necedad, ahora la miraba distinto: — Vea pues… la misma terca, pero bien encarrilada.

— (Carrasquilla / English) And the people, who once laughed at her stubbornness, now saw her differently: — Look at that… the same stubborn woman, but now well guided.

— (Efe Gómez) La variable no fue la terquedad. Fue su dirección.

— (Efe Gómez / English) The variable was not the stubbornness. It was its direction.

— (Carrasquilla) Porque es que, mijo, la inguandia no es mala del todo… es como mula cerrera: si no la sabe llevar, lo bota; pero si la amansa, lo lleva lejos… lejísimos.

— (Carrasquilla / English) Because stubbornness is not entirely bad… it is like a wild mule: if you cannot guide it, it throws you off; but if you tame it, it will carry you far… very far.

🌿 Epílogo / Epilogue

La terquedad sin conciencia destruye. La constancia con sentido construye. Y entre una y otra… solo hay un paso: darse cuenta.

Stubbornness without awareness destroys. Persistence with purpose builds. And between the two… there is only one step: realizing.
