Unlyrical “Prose Poetry” Is Prose Pretending to Be Poetry

Unlyrical “prose poetry” is prose — pretending to be poetry.

Across languages and centuries, poetry has always been defined by its music: rhythm, cadence, tonal echo, and the singability of language. When music disappears, poetry disappears.

In recent decades, however, unmusical fragments of prose — broken into short lines — have been labeled “prose poetry” in universities, journals, and awards, as if typography alone could turn prose into song.

It cannot.

The distinction is simple:

• Prose does not require music.
• Poetry does.
• Line breaks are not music.
• Emotion without cadence is not poetry.

If a piece has musicality, then it is already lyrical free verse or lyrical prose — both legitimate poetic forms. In those cases, the term “prose poetry” becomes unnecessary — even redundant.

This criticism is not about content or emotion. Prose can be brilliant, moving, profound, and essential. But its brilliance does not transform it into another genre.

A diary does not become a novel because it is heartfelt. A paragraph does not become a poem because it is broken into lines.

Where the music ends, poetry ends. What remains is prose — whether it admits it or not.
