What is the difference between iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS?

Apple’s messaging apps currently support several communication standards, including iMessage, RCS, and SMS/MMS. Although they are all used for exchanging messages, there are important differences in terms of features, compatibility, and security.
How iMessage works
iMessage is Apple’s proprietary messaging system and works over Wi-Fi or cellular data. This service is available between Apple devices and allows you to send text, photos, high-quality videos, documents, links, reactions, stickers, visual effects, and much more.
One of the main advantages of iMessage is its full integration into the Apple ecosystem. Additionally, it supports typing indicators, delivery receipts, and read receipts. Messages sent through this service are identified by blue bubbles.
Another important point is security. iMessage uses end-to-end encryption, preventing third parties from accessing the content of messages during transmission. To identify a secure conversation, the app displays a padlock icon at the top of the chat.
The service can be enabled or disabled in the system settings, within the section dedicated to messages. If no Wi-Fi connection is available, iMessage automatically switches to using mobile data.
What Changes with RCS Messaging
RCS represents an evolution of traditional SMS and MMS. This standard enables a more modern messaging experience across different smartphone brands, including Android and Apple devices.
With RCS, you can send messages with higher-quality multimedia content, share links, and view typing indicators or read receipts. Just like traditional SMS messages, RCS messages appear in green bubbles in the Messages app.
Apple has adopted the RCS standard in accordance with industry specifications. In the latest versions of iOS, some carriers already support end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, although this feature depends on support from all networks involved in the conversation.

When encryption is enabled, the word “Encrypted” appears alongside a padlock icon at the top of the conversation. If this indicator is not present, it means that messages are not fully protected during transmission.
RCS functionality depends directly on the mobile carrier. During the connection to the network, information necessary to authenticate the device and establish communication is exchanged, including data such as the phone number and IP address.
To use this technology on an iPhone, you must have iOS 26.5 and an RCS-compatible plan with your carrier.

SMS and MMS are still available
When iMessage and RCS aren’t available, the iPhone automatically falls back to traditional SMS and MMS. These services remain compatible with virtually any cell phone and have been used on mobile networks for many years.
SMS is mainly used for simple text messages, while MMS allows you to send photos, videos, and other multimedia content. As with RCS, these messages appear in green bubbles.
Despite their broad compatibility, there is a significant security limitation. SMS and MMS messages do not use end-to-end encryption, which means they can be intercepted during transmission.
Here too, functionality depends on the mobile carrier. To authenticate the device on the network, data such as IMEI, IMSI, IP address, and phone number may be used.
