Chapter 17, Episode 7: When the Robber Became the Hunted

The crumbling warehouses loomed like silent sentinels at the edge of town, their walls scarred with time and neglect. I crouched behind a stack of rusted metal barrels, heart hammering, eyes tracing the edges of the shadows. Until now, I had always run, always vanished. But tonight, the hunter would feel what it meant to be hunted.

The ash-map burned in my mind, guiding me through the back entrances, the paths no ordinary visitor would notice. Every step had to be precise. One misstep, one echo of a careless footfall, and they would descend like the ghosts of Lagos I had been fleeing.

I slipped through the first warehouse, moving low, keeping to the dim light that leaked through broken panels. Inside, crates and forgotten machinery created a labyrinth of hiding places. I could hear voices ... low, rough, discussing shipments and payments, unaware that their prey was now among them.

Then I saw him: the scarred man. Not watching me ... yet. He was busy, confident, believing the tables had never turned. And that overconfidence was my advantage.

I moved silently, closing distance, memorizing exits, noting where the others congregated. The thrill of control raced through me. For the first time, fear was no longer the fuel; strategy was. Every movement was deliberate, every breath measured.

Then, a misstep ... a can clanged to the ground. Voices rose instantly, a chorus of alarm. The scarred man’s head snapped toward me, eyes wide, fury replacing surprise. I bolted, darting behind crates, slipping between shadows. The hunters were now my prey, and I was ready to lead the chase.

Through the maze of rusted corridors, I could hear their curses, the shuffle of boots, the metallic clink of weapons being drawn. But I had the advantage: knowledge of their ground, the map burned into memory, and a resolve sharper than any blade they could brandish.

For the first time, adrenaline didn’t threaten to consume me. It propelled me, made me precise, made me unrecognizable even to myself. The tables had turned. And in the echoing emptiness of the warehouses, I realized:

Being hunted teaches survival. But hunting teaches power.

Tonight, I would see how far that power could go.
