The Lost Clock: Why You Can’t Reconstruct the Week on a Desert Island

Imagine you’re stranded on an island, no calendar, no phone, no clocks, it is just the sky, the sun, and the moon. Give it a year or two, and you’ll start to notice patterns. The sun rises a bit higher each day until midsummer, then sinks again toward midwinter. With some patience and observation, you could mark out the solstices, maybe even the equinoxes. Months? You could track them roughly by the moon.

But what you won’t be able to recover is the week.

The seven-day week, which is so basic, so ingrained, is not astronomically anchored. It’s not tied to the moon’s phases (which average about 29.5 days), nor the solar year. It’s a human invention, passed down for nearly 2,500 years, from Babylon to Jerusalem to Rome to the rest of the world.

Even if you track full moons and solstices, you won’t know if it’s Tuesday or Friday. There’s no cosmic hint. The weekday cycle is a rolling rhythm, and once broken, it’s lost.

Which means that certain holidays, like Easter, defined as the first Sunday after the first full moon after the spring equinox, become impossible to pinpoint. You might detect the full moon, and you might estimate the equinox, but Sunday is gone. The anchor for the days is cultural, and not found by looking at the sky.

Fun fact: the earliest use of the word computer referred to people called computists: specialists in calculating the date of Easter, a task that involved lunar cycles, leap years, and ecclesiastical rules. Even when you know which day is Sunday, keeping Easter on track is hard enough.

The names of the days we use today also reflect this ancient blend of astronomy and mythology. The Romans named them after celestial bodies and gods: dies Solis (Sunday), dies Lunae (Monday), and so on mapped to the Sun, Moon, and the five visible planets. These were later adapted by Germanic peoples: Tiw’s Day (Tuesday), Woden’s Day (Wednesday), Thor’s Day (Thursday), and Frigg’s Day (Friday), aligning Norse gods with Roman deities.

So while you might get close to knowing the date (modulo leap years), and even celebrate your own personal solstice festivals, you’ll never know when Sunday comes.

The week is culture. It may be one of the oldest cultural continuities we all still live by. A shared common ground.
