How I Successfully Passed the DP-100 Exam: Tips and Insights

Introduction

Last week, I achieved a significant milestone by passing the DP-100 exam and becoming a Microsoft Certified: Azure Data Scientist Associate. This certification has been a goal of mine for some time, and I’m thrilled to share my journey, DP-100 exam tips, and insights to help you prepare for this challenging exam.

My Preparation Journey

I first learned about the DP-100 exam in mid-2024. However, due to college exams and other Machine Learning commitments, I couldn’t focus on it initially. I started preparing once, but after 10–15 days, I gave up when I scored a mere 42% on my first MS Learn practice assessment.

Fast forward to December 2024: on December 4th, my semester exams ended. Starting December 5th, I resumed my preparation with full dedication. I began making notes alongside studying and dedicated about one month to prepare, setting aside 1–2 hours each day. My study plan was a mix of Microsoft Learn modules, in-depth documentation, and third-party practice tests.

Where to Study from?

Microsoft Learn Content: I began with the Microsoft Learn modules provided here. These modules provided a solid foundation. After completing all of them, I felt confident that I could crack the exam. Then I took the MS Learn practice assessments, which I found to be very easy compared to the actual exam.

Azure Machine Learning Documentation: The Azure Machine Learning documentation was indispensable. I went through it twice to ensure I had a thorough understanding of key concepts and SDKv2 functionalities. YOU MUST GO THROUGH THE DOCUMENTATION.

Third-Party Practice Tests:

There are various third-party practice tests available out there, I opted for Skillcertpro’s test package because their questions were more aligned with SDKv2, which the current exam emphasizes. About 70% of their questions were relevant, providing a realistic sense of the exam’s difficulty.

Key Topics Covered in the Exam

The DP-100 exam covers a range of topics, with Responsible AI being the most critical. Here’s a quick overview of other important areas:

• MLClient: Understanding how to interact with Azure Machine Learning services programmatically.
• Git Integration Using SSH: Managing version control and collaboration using Git.
• Storage Services: Familiarity with Azure storage solutions and their integration with machine learning workflows.
• AutoML: Automating machine learning model development and deployment.
• Designer: Utilizing Azure’s visual interface for building machine learning models without extensive coding.

Types of Questions and How to Tackle Them

The exam features various question types, each requiring different strategies:

• Single Correct and Multiple Correct: You can tackle them easily even if you have good idea about the topic, by eliminating the odd ones out. Use MS Learn during the exam — it really helps a lot.
• Arrange in Order: Practice sequencing tasks or processes, such as the steps involved in training and evaluating a model. Practice labs during the learning phase to get an idea about how to do things sequentially.
• True/False: Pay close attention to the nuances in scenarios to determine the correctness of statements.
• Fill-in-the-Code Snippets: Gain hands-on experience with SDKv2 to confidently complete code-related questions. Some of the code snippets are directly from the documentation examples.

Exam Day Experience

On exam day, I faced a 51 questions. Generally, you can expect between 40–60 questions within the 100-minute timeframe. Here’s how I managed my time:

Time Management Tips:

• First Iteration: Answered all questions I could solve in under two minutes. Dedicating too much time on a single question can create hurry in the end. During the first iteration, just pass through all questions, answer which you can easily do. I spent almost 30 minutes on the 1st iteration.
• Second Iteration: Returned to the tougher questions with the remaining time. This is the time when you actually think about the possible answer, you refer to MS Learn to find the hints/answers. I had ample amount of time to think as well as to use MS Learn, you dont need to worry about time left, you actually have good amout of time to solve roughly 50 questions.

Using Microsoft Learn During the Exam:

One of the standout features is the ability to access Microsoft Learn documentation during the exam. In the last 30 minutes, I used this feature to verify answers and find solutions to a few challenging questions which i couldn’t remember or about the new topics. To make the most of this, ensure you’re very familiar with the Azure Machine Learning documentation beforehand.

Tips and Recommendations

• Use a Mix of Resources: Combine Microsoft Learn content with up-to-date third-party practice tests like Skillcertpro or MeasureUp.
• Deep Dive into Documentation: Focus on understanding Azure Machine Learning SDKv2 documentation.
• Manage Your Time Wisely: Allocate time efficiently to handle both easy and challenging questions.
• Practice Regularly: Use practice tests to get accustomed to the exam’s difficulty and question types.

Common Challenges and How to Overcome Them

Outdated Practice Questions: Many third-party practice tests use SDKv1, which is now outdated. Opt for providers that update their questions to align with SDKv2 to ensure relevance.

MS Learn Practice Tests:

MS Learn practice assessments are much easier than the actual DP-100 exam. Don’t be overconfident if you score well. Use them to build foundational knowledge, but supplement with challenging third-party practice tests like Skillcertpro to better prepare for the exam’s difficulty and real-world scenarios.
