A Book that Feels Like a Cozy Blanket

There are those days…As if the whole world is against you: you are stressed, tired, you argue but there is still work to be done. No one listens, no one comes to your rescue. At the end of the day you just want to go to bed, but you can’t sleep, thoughts are spinning around your head.

On a night like this I opened my laptop, and started to talking to ChatGPT (do not judge now…) telling it that I can’t sleep, I’m feeling low, and probably reading something would help. There were a couple of books on my reading list, but all of them felt to heavy to start when I was already overwhelmed. So the AI recommended me a book.

I instantly opened Amazon and looked up the title. Raving reviews, reasonable price for a Kindle edition, so I thought I had nothing to lose. Clicked on the button and after a minute I started reading The Comfort Book by Matt Haig.

Even though the author is a bestselling writer I was a little bit reluctant when I opened the ebook on the Kindle app. I didn’t really believe what one of the review said: “This book is just a big hug when you need it most.” But it actually is.

It has simple chapters sharing simple truth in different forms: a family story, a short sentence, a quote. I read the lines one by one and felt like the words cuddling with me, providing comfort when it was nowhere to be found.

I found peace in different thoughts, like:

“No, my niceness is not weakness.”

or

“Continually looking for the meaning of life is like looking for the meaning of toast. It is sometimes better just to eat the toast.”

or

“Silence is pain. But it is a pain with an exit route. When we can’t speak, we can write. When we can’t write, we can read. When we can’t read, we can listen. Words are seeds. Language is a way back to life. And it is sometimes the most vital comfort we have.”

After an hour of reading, I could finally fall asleep.

Sometimes you just need a couple words from someone you don’t know, you would most likely never meet. They don’t talk to you in person, on the phone or in chat. They just write a book, you find it and eventually you get that much needed virtual hug.
