The Hidden Threat of 764: Why We Must Protect Our Children Online

In recent years European and international police forces have dismantled parts of a disturbing online criminal network known as 764 — a loosely-organized group of violent extremists and predators who have used seemingly innocuous social media, gaming chats, and messaging apps to groom, manipulate, and exploit minors. Investigations by law enforcement in Germany, Italy, Spain, Greece, the United States, and through Europol have linked suspected 764 members to a range of crimes, including child sexual abuse material (CSAM), blackmail, threats of violence, and influencing vulnerable children to self-harm and suicide.

764 emerged in 2021 and grew rapidly on encrypted or lightly moderated platforms, where adults and older teens befriended young users, coerced them into producing harmful content, and used that material to control and exploit them further. Some suspects are now in custody following coordinated investigations across Europe and beyond, with charges ranging from possession of CSAM and sexual exploitation of minors to planning violent acts.

This stark reality underscores an uncomfortable truth: the internet is a space where malicious individuals can hide behind avatars and false identities. Children, especially those unsupervised online, are vulnerable to manipulation and psychological harm. Parents and guardians should therefore limit unsupervised internet use, educate children about online risks, and ensure digital interactions occur within clear safety boundaries and adult oversight. Awareness, open communication, and vigilant supervision are essential to keeping our children safe in a world where criminals increasingly operate behind screens.
