Power Management for your Computer- ACPI

Ever wonder, why your laptop heats up so much and which technology is actually responsible for making sure that this heat is below acceptable limit and doesn’t drain much of your system power while it’s in critical use.

It’s Advance Configuration and Power Interface aka ACPI . One of primary responsibility of this technology is to make OS (Windows, Linux etc.) aware about different power hungry integrated circuits on your motherboard by set of tables as shown in Figure 1. BIOS on a typical system provides set of these tables to operating system after BDS phase as shown here.

The tables here are coded in specific programming language called ASL ( ACPI Source Language) which is actually interpreted by AML (ACPI Machine Language) . OSPM ( Operating System Power Management) entity in Windows/Linux gets access to all these tables and call ASL methods appropriately during sleep/shutdown .
