The First Time I didn't Watch The Super Bowl Halftime Show

When people are burnt out over politics

Many people say Bad Bunny put on an amazing halftime show at this year's Super Bowl. I don't know, I didn't watch it. I also heard Kid Rock's counter halftime show was horrible. I don't know, I also didn't watch it.

Instead, I washed dishes from my wife's and mine Super Bowl snacks (including my favorite smoked wings). Then we turned on YouTube and watched some SNL sketches until the game came back on. It was the first halftime show I can remember skipping.

The reason we skipped both of these shows is pretty simple: I'm tired of politics seeping into every facet of life. Yes, there are some serious issues in our society that we need to address. I'm not going to argue that. And Bad Bunny, though I am not a fan of his music, is one of the most popular musicians in the world and probably brought some new eyes to the Super Bowl.

It didn't help that the game was one of the most boring Super Bowls I can remember (seriously, the only scores were three field goals in the first three quarters). But we have begun to forget one of the main reasons we love sports. It provides an escape.

We all know life is hard. The world and our country face many problems. But for many of us, turning on a ball game is a chance to escape reality for a few hours. We can forget about our problems, cheer on our favorite team (or a pick if our favorite didn't make it to the championship), watch some fun commercials, and forget the worries of the world.

Instead, we get messages about ICE, and people are mad mad the headliner did the show in Spanish. And yes, these events are an opportunity to put eyes on some issues. But we are not blind to the problems that our country is facing. We don't need a halftime show at the Super Bowl to remind us of our problems. It is supposed to be an escape.

I'm hoping next year's show is less political and more entertaining. Also, my Chicago Bears will win it.
