Distinct from traditional sustainability, which often emphasizes the minimization of harm or maintenance of existing resources, regenerative sustainability focuses on actively enhancing ecological and societal health. While there is an approach promoting Regenerative Economics, it does not stand out as a major aspect of the broader regenerative approach except within specific schools of thought within the increasingly expansive regenerative community.
The regenerative approach recognizes that human systems, as part of the larger living system, must not only avoid degradation, but also contribute to the revitalization of ecosystems and communities. Different types of regenerative principles emphasize various aspects of the environment, economic systems, and sociological frameworks, and their approaches are adaptable based on local contexts and specific sustainability goals being introduced.
One core approach to regenerative sustainability is ecological restoration, which seeks to restore and improve the health of natural ecological systems by actively engaging in conservation practices and habitat renewal.
In contrast to approaches that simply conserve or protect natural areas, regenerative ecological practices aim to rebuild soil, enhance biodiversity, and restore natural water cycles, with the proposed integration of permaculture, natural ecosystems can be created, even if man-made.
