“Tragedy, Poirot!” Hastings’ wings beat a frantic rhythm against the reeds. “The Lady Ash-Widgeon has discovered a fifth egg in her clutch! She claims it is a miracle — a sign of her superior lineage. The pond is calling her the ‘Matriarch of the Marsh.’”

Quackule Poirot did not look up from the meticulous task of straightening a stray feather.

“Lineage, Hastings, is often a matter of geography. Tell me, where does the Lady Ash-Widgeon spend her Tuesday afternoons?”

“By the golf course pond, I believe. Why?”

Poirot’s bill-mustache twitched with a hint of a smile.

“Précisément. Observe the ‘miracle’ egg through my pince-nez, mon ami. Note the lack of pores, the unnatural smoothness, and the faint, embossed numbers.”

Hastings gasped. “A golf ball? She’s nesting on a Titleist?”

“She was desperate for the status of a larger brood, Hastings. She did not want a child; she wanted a headline. She traded her dignity for a piece of dimpled plastic. Order and method, mon canard, and the little grey feathers — would have told her that a duckling who requires a five-iron to hatch is no duckling at all.”

Poirot sighed.

“It is merely… social ambition.”
